Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida wants to make one more MMORPG "from scratch" before he dies. "I am a game designer, so I always have several ideas for games," Yoshida said in a recent interview with Inverse . "I can't talk about them here, but I think that goes for any game designer. I am the kind of person who's happy as long as they can make games, so while there isn't anything in particular, I occasionally think that I would like to make one more MMORPG title, from scratch, before I die." Although Yoshida, affectionately referred to as Yoshi-P by the Final Fantasy XIV community, didn't go into specifics on what kinds of ideas he would like to see in a new MMORPG (or whether it would be a Final Fantasy-branded project or not) he did spend the interview imagining what the future of both MMOs and online games in general could look like. Quantum computing, for example, could have major effects on the genre and video games in general in the next five to 10 years, … [Read more...] about Final Fantasy XIV Director Wants To Make “One More MMORPG From Scratch” Before He Dies

Where others failed, this mod finally adds a 3rd dimension to Doom’s enemies
Audio player loading… Voxel Doom, a graphics mod for the original Doom that turns the game's various sprites into full-on 3D voxel models, released its 1.0 version (opens in new tab) today. Made by a modder named Cheello (opens in new tab) , the mod affects everything from the game's legioned demons to its ammo pick-ups, adding a sense of depth and—get this—letting you view its once-obstinately flat 2D sprites from different angles. Angles! We've been keeping our eye on Voxel Doom (opens in new tab) here at PCG for a while now, but the Doom modding community has been talking about the idea for even longer. The problem was about both artistic capability and technical capacity: any project that was going to try replacing Doom's sprites would need to walk a tightrope over the uncanny valley, making sure that the models it created weren't incongruous with Doom's much-beloved art style. Voxel modelling—a technique that uses 3D cubes instead of traditional 2D … [Read more...] about Where others failed, this mod finally adds a 3rd dimension to Doom’s enemies
After years in development, witch shop sim Potionomics is finally releasing this autumn
Audio player loading… I've been loosely following the development of witch shop sim Potionomics (not to be confused with Potion Craft), for a long time— over four years , apparently. It's been "coming soon-ish" for long enough to stretch that definition, but now at last it's coming soon-ish for real. With a new trailer that shows us a cross-section of the brewing, haggling, and management involved in running a successful potion shop, Potionomics has also conjured up an autumn 2022 release window. I've long been hoping that shop management sims would get their own massive heyday, and Potionomics certainly looks like it might supply my demand. Casual life simmers (and deep cut Recettear fans) will recognize the setup: Sylvia the witch inherits a potion shop from a dearly departed family member and she's stuck reinvigorating the place to drag herself out of debt. To pull it off, Sylvia spends time using different ingredients to brew new types of potions, decorates … [Read more...] about After years in development, witch shop sim Potionomics is finally releasing this autumn
Twitch may finally start telling people why they’ve been banned
Audio player loading… Historically, Twitch policy has been to not comment on individual streamer bans—even to inform those streamers themselves what, exactly, they did to warrant a ban. It's often not too hard to figure out in cases of obvious policy violations, but sometimes a streamer gets the boot and we're never told exactly why: An indefinite suspension of politics streamer Destiny (opens in new tab) in March, for instance, prompted some fairly solid speculation, but not actual confirmation, of the reason. But that may be changing, as Twitch vice president of trust and safety Angela Hession told the Washington Post (opens in new tab) that it is looking into including clips of infractions with suspension notification emails in the future. "Safety is a journey, and this is a number-one ask from our community," Hession said. "So we’re looking at how we can attach more details for people to understand—like the video itself. That’s something we’re definitely working … [Read more...] about Twitch may finally start telling people why they’ve been banned
Lord Of The Rings Dwarvish And Elvish Keyboards Revealed, Cost $170 Each
The first-ever officially licensed The Lord of the Rings keyboards have been announced, and they're available to preorder now. Drop, makers of mechanical keyboards, has announced a collaboration with Middle-earth Enterprises for a full-blown Lord of the Rings keyboard set meant to celebrate the fantasy series. Drop already released a Lord of the Rings keycap set, but these are full keyboards--there are two, themed around Elves and Dwarves. "Both keyboards reflect the saga's intricate details and iconic imagery, with the Dwarvish keyboard's design based on the Doors of Durin while the Elvish keyboard's design features a stylized version of the Two Trees of Valinor," reads a line from the press release. "The Dwarvish and Elvish keyboards also feature Dwarvish and Elvish characters on the keycaps, allowing users to express themselves in these masterfully created intricate languages." The keyboard sets are built with "premium materials for an enthusiast-level look and feel," the … [Read more...] about Lord Of The Rings Dwarvish And Elvish Keyboards Revealed, Cost $170 Each
After eight years, the space MMO where players create the ships launches next month
Audio player loading… Developer Novaquark has announced that the ambitious, player-driven MMO Dual Universe will launch on PC September 27. The game's been in development for eight years and the pitch is essentially a player-created EVE Online, with a flexible voxel-based crafting system that allows players to build more-or-less what they want. Dual Universe has been in beta for the last two years, over which time it's gradually implemented stuff like space warfare, asteroid mining, and space markets, without the whole galaxy collapsing. The launch will also feature a new first-time player experience (something that EVE itself has, somewhat belatedly, become obsessive about in recent years). The developer claims that this features some of "the most advanced voxel technology ever created", and that player creation is only one part of the game's appeal: the point being that most systems are down to players. The economy is player-driven and the idea is that every playstyle … [Read more...] about After eight years, the space MMO where players create the ships launches next month
Microsoft inclusive lead reveals there’s a ‘bit of a plateau’ in accessibility tech
Accessibility Week This feature is part of PC Gamer's Accessibility Week (opens in new tab) , running from August 16, where we're exploring accessible games, hardware, mods and more. I've been speaking to Bryce Johnson, Inclusive Lead at Microsoft Devices and co-inventor of the Xbox Adaptive Controller (XAC), about the process behind and reception of the accessible gaming device. And although he's happy about where the project ended up and where the accessibility industry is going as a whole, he's a little concerned about where things might go from here. The XAC is Microsoft's answer to making games more accessible for players with disabilities. That description makes it sound so simple, but making an accessible controller is definitely not straightforward, even with backing from a company whose net worth is about $1 trillion. Johnson explains that it was first important to recognise the limitations of current controller configurations. Without full fluid range of … [Read more...] about Microsoft inclusive lead reveals there’s a ‘bit of a plateau’ in accessibility tech
World’s biggest mod site bans mods replacing Pride flags: ‘We don’t want to and won’t argue this with you’
Audio player loading… Spider-Man Remastered (opens in new tab) recently launched on PC, and Insomniac's excellent web-em-up instantly attracted the attention of modders. This unfortunately included an individual who took offense at the game's rendition of New York City including some Pride flags among the absolute plethora of American ones. They created a mod that removed the Pride flags, replacing them with the stars and stripes, then uploaded it to Nexusmods using a sockpuppet account called 'Mike Hawk'. Nexusmods (opens in new tab) is arguably the most popular centralised mod database online (sorry Moddb (opens in new tab) ), with a nice clean look, a good community, and all the functionality a PC gamer could wish for. Nexus swiftly removed the mod, and banned the modder's sockpuppet and main account. The sanction led to some community drama about whether someone innocent had been punished. The people who run Nexusmods subsequently decided enough is enough when … [Read more...] about World’s biggest mod site bans mods replacing Pride flags: ‘We don’t want to and won’t argue this with you’
She-Hulk Bosses And Star Comment On Overworked VFX Artists Working With Marvel
Over the past few months, there's been a discussion online about VFX artists being displeased when working for Marvel Entertainment. According to one Reddit thread , some artists are done working with Marvel, and they've been harboring those feelings for quite some time. However, the cast and crew of the upcoming She-Hulk: Attorney At Law Disney+ series stand in solidarity with these talented artists. During the TCA summer press tour She-Hulk panel, the showrunner discussed what's happening with VFX artists Marvel has hired to work on its movies and TV shows. "I feel incredibly deferential to how talented these artists are and how quickly they have to work," said EP and showrunner Jessica Gao. "Obviously, like much quicker than probably [the amount of time] given to them, in terms of like churning these things out. "I know that there's a lot of eyes on the CG and a lot of critique or whatever, but I do think that we have to be super conscious of, like you're saying, how the … [Read more...] about She-Hulk Bosses And Star Comment On Overworked VFX Artists Working With Marvel
