Final Fantasy 7 is still revered as one of the greatest and most influential games of all time. It has been re-released on modern day consoles in HD, but fans are looking to do one better: they are using machine learning to create an even better HD remaster of FF7 that they can be proud of. One of the downers about the Final Fantasy 7 re-release was that while the graphics were upscaled, the CG pre-rendered backgrounds were not. This is due to Square Enix losing the original files back in the 90s, and as a result they had to apply blurring and smearing filters to hide glaring problems with the models in modern HD settings. The end result is acceptable, but still comes off looking extremely dated. Thanks to the PC modding scene, there appears to be a remedy. The Final Fantasy modding forum Qhimm has a mod called the Remako HD Field Mod which uses AI upscaling technology to improve the backgrounds. CaptRobau, the mod’s author, cites a program called Gigapixel that takes the … [Read more...] about Final Fantasy 7 fans are using machine learning to create their own HD remaster

Final Fantasy is 30, so let’s rank the 10 best games in the series
Final Fantasy is now 30 years old – so let’s celebrate with a good old fan ranking. Thirty years provides an awful lot of history to mine and a truly ridiculous number of games. Since the original Final Fantasy made its debut in Japan on December 18, 1987 the series has seen fifteen main numbered titles, three films, and a ridiculous number of spin-off games including a few discrete series’ including Crystal Chronicles, Tactics, Chocobo’s Dungeon and franchises built around specific entries or characters. But which is the best? Well, you know… it’s complicated. Obviously whatever I write here is going to come in for criticism, but screw it: I got my start writing about video games as a teenager by setting up a Final Fantasy fan site, so like any good fan I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about this. Before you hop straight to the comments to tell me to drop dead and all that, here’s the rules for this list: The MMOs aren’t … [Read more...] about Final Fantasy is 30, so let’s rank the 10 best games in the series
The 10 biggest E3 2018 no-shows, from Final Fantasy 7 to Red Dead Redemption 2
It’s that time again. That time when we must slightly taint our excitement at a really good set of E3 2018 games by having a slight grumble, in an uncomfortably entitled fashion, about the games that we expected to see at E3 2018 but which did not appear. Or, to put a more positive spin on it, these are the missing E3 games that, via the absence of their expected appearance, pave the way for a cavalcade of exciting surprises and reveals over the rest of the year, and perhaps in a few cases even set the foundation for E3 2019. Yeah, let’s go with that. It sounds nicer, and far less ‘angry internet’. Read on, and be further hyped by the following great games that you entirely forgot about because you were far too busy gawping at Cyberpunk 2077. Red Dead Redemption 2 Okay, maybe this one was a long-shot. Because, as much as Red Dead Redemption 2 will be the biggest game in the October release schedule without batting an eyelid, that’s probably … [Read more...] about The 10 biggest E3 2018 no-shows, from Final Fantasy 7 to Red Dead Redemption 2
Splinter Cell, Gears of War 5, and More Listed by Walmart Canada
About a couple of months ago, Splinter Cell fans got their hopes up that they would see a potential announcement for a new game in the long-dormant franchise at E3 2018 thanks to an Amazon listing that sparked rumors about its existence. Now, even more evidence seems to be pointing toward a sequel in the stealth-action series being revealed, as Walmart Canada has listed a fresh installment in Tom Clancy-branded property on its website alongside several other unannounced titles. As seen in the tweet below from the prolific Twitter user Wario64, Walmart Canada’s listing has not only stoked the hearts of Splinter Cell fans for a fresh entry, but also it has possibly spilled the beans a tad too early on projects yet to be officially announced such as Gears of War 5, Just Cause 4, and Dragon Quest 2 for PS4 and Xbox One. Additionally, the page has placeholders for titles such as LEGO DC Villains, Forza Horizons 5, a new Assassin’s Creed, and perhaps most surprisingly, Rage 2. … [Read more...] about Splinter Cell, Gears of War 5, and More Listed by Walmart Canada

Walmart Canada has just posted a huge update to their website that adds a bunch of as-yet unannounced games to their pre-order listings.
