Lost in Space is out now on Netflix, worldwide. The show, which has received a mixed reaction from critics (personally, I loved it), eschews darker sci-fi themes like isolation and the alien in favour of family, adventure, and strong gender role models. It’s more an exploration of the family dynamic than actual space, and it has an optimistic outlook on the whole thing. That spirit holds very true to the ‘60s version of the show but, thankfully, this optimism is one of the few elements that has been retained for Lost in Space’s reboot. Well, that and the robot, which no longer looks like Lady Gaga’s vacuum cleaner. Netflix’s version is infinitely more progressive, with complex interpersonal dynamics (this family is pretty broken at the start of the season), and far stronger female characters than the deferring women of the original.“What I really got from the original was the family aspect,” says Taylor Russell, who plays eldest daughter Judy … [Read more...] about “We have some very strong, opinionated, intelligent female characters that run the show”

Today, March 8th is International Women’s Day. It’s a global day celebrating women’s equality, and the political, economic, and social achievements of women. To honor this day, we’re asking a few of our inspiring Unity women what this day means to them. We encourage you to take a moment to read their responses and celebrate the important women who inspire you. What does International Women’s Day mean to you? Sarah Levantine (Technical Program Manager): To me, this is a day to reflect on the power and potential of women around the world. We can take the opportunity to honor influential women who have come before us, and to lift up those who will follow. Of course we want to do this every day, but setting aside a specific occasion really shines a light on the best of our gender. Lisa Eliasson (BD/Evangelism Coordinator): International Women’s Day is something I have celebrated for as long as I can remember. It is a beautiful day to celebrate … [Read more...] about International Women’s Day 2018: Celebrating women in technology – Unity Blog
In the wake of renewed debate about violence and video games, I suppose I should put that sociology degree to work and explain, roughly, the academic state of play. It’s worth noting that there’s next to nothing that supports what I like to call the “monkey-see-monkey-do” model of media influence. That is: a piece of media shows a violent act, and viewers/players go out and commit the same act. The heart of the debate in the social sciences is, instead, about “aggression.” And, indeed, in the words of the American Psychological Association, “all existing quantitative reviews of the violent video game literature have found a direct association between violent video game use and aggressive outcomes.” But what, exactly, are “aggressive outcomes”? As I often tell students, the simplest words are the most devilish in science (consider how a sociologist might have to confront the idea of “love” and you’ll see … [Read more...] about Opinion: So what *does* the science say about games and violence?
It's been over a decade since the Disney Channel animated series Kim Possible came to an end. Now, Disney is rebooting the franchise in a way that might come as quite a surprise. Kim Possible is being turned into a live-action Disney Channel original movie. The network announced the news with a note that it is looking to fill key roles in the project. "Casting has begun on a live-action Kim Possible movie for the Disney Channel Original Movie franchise, 16 years after the popular character--a typical high school girl who, in her spare time, saves the world from evil villains--debuted in the animated comedy/adventure series that became a global hit," a press release reads. "The series was lauded for its empowered female role model who uses her brain, heart, and expertise to save the day."While there are no details about which characters from the animated series will make the jump to live-action, chances are the movie will follow the source material closely. The script is being written by … [Read more...] about Kim Possible Is Getting Rebooted As A Live-Action Movie–Seriously
Females on film While film school classes and incensed critics continue to debate the lack of women in film, female actresses are fighting the good fight on the silver screen itself. Alas, not in anywhere near the numbers needed - provided things were a little bit fairer, of course - or that woman over the age of 40 didn't suddenly become a movie exec's idea of nightmare kryptonite.Over the years, these actresses have been asked to play any number of damsels, dames, nagging housewives, ditzy girlfriends and occasionally (just occasionally) an interesting and nuanced character. This list celebrates the latter, looking at the very best female creations in the history of cinema.
