Feature request tool
SoFplus, a compatibility mod for Raven Software’s gory 2000 shooter Soldier of Fortune, has disabled downloads and taken its website offline in the wake of what the creator says is "a request to remove or block access to SoFplus files" from Activision, as picked up on Reddit. Released 14 years ago, the SoFplus mod’s primary purpose is to resolve a number of bugs in Soldier of Fortune version 1.07f. As explained on a cached version of the SoFplus website, “An unpatched SoF has a number of vulnerabilities that allow a remote attacker to take over your PC. SoFplus blocks all known exploits. Without SoFplus, your SoF server or client can be crashed or hacked. It’s even possible to take over your entire PC.”That’s a nasty-sounding old bug. In addition to this, SoFplus adds a number of compatibility features for modern machines. This includes widescreen video mode support, additional menus to configure settings, default enabling of console, and … [Read more...] about Soldier of Fortune compatibility mod taken offline after alleged Activision request
Today we are going to take a look at the PlayCanvas HTML5 3D Game engine. While not strictly a tutorial, this guide should give you a pretty good idea of what the PlayCanvas Engine includes,if it is right for you and give you enough information to get you started. Where it does get a bit confusing is where the open source part stops, and the pay to use it part starts. Getting Started There are three ways to develop with PlayCanvas. Download and run the tools locally, use the online tools and code using a Github or Bitbucket repository or, as I am going to do in this example, work entirely in their online … [Read more...] about Home > Programming > PlayCanvas is the world’s easiest to use WebGL Game Engine. Today, I want to talk about my experience of working in a Feature Factory. This is something I really struggle with in a lot of my development projects and the idea basically is that if you work on something you can end up just making it bigger and more complex and crazier and just pump out features. You don’t actually really produce a whole game. I remember one experience, it wasn’t a game, but it was a project that I worked on for a long time. You may recognize it: It’s called Game Dev Underground. The idea in the beginning was that I was going to build something for game developers to help market and promote their games. So I built this basic website, and it was all based on the premise that the landing page was going to be more marketing focused. It was meant to give a marketing grade landing page directly to game developers without any of the fancy stuff that other sites have. And when I started on it, it was very clear like that that’s what I wanted to do. … [Read more...] about Are You Working In A Feature Factory?
The Khronos Group has launched the next version of its cross-platform open graphics API, Vulkan. Version 1.1 expands Vulkan's repertoire with improved developer tools, wide industry adoption, and new specifications for evolved functionality and performance. It packs a number of developer-requested features, such as subgroup operations, and also integrates a wide range of proven extensions, like simultaneous rendering and cross-process API interoperability, from Vulkan 1.0. A new SPIR-V 1.3 specification also expands the capabilities of the Vulkan shader intermediate representation, supporting subgroup operations and allowing for enhanced compiler optimizations. "With enhanced developer tools, rigorous conformance testing and the public Vulkan Ecosystem Forum, Khronos is delivering on its goal to develop a complete and vibrant Vulkan ecosystem,” said Arm engineer and Vulkan Working Group chair, Tom Olson. "Vulkan 1.1 is a response to prioritized industry requests … [Read more...] about Khronos expands Vulkan graphics API with dev-requested features
