A fake trailer for a movie based on Friends has taken over Facebook feeds and YouTube’s trending section in the last week, causing a stir among hopeful fans and skeptics. The trailer, so obviously fake, continues to circulate at a pretty staggering rate, leading some people to ask why there’s such a hubbub about a fan-made trailer for a movie that’s never going to happen. The bigger question, however, is why does this keep happening on an almost annual basis? A well-done fake trailer for a feature-length Friends movie that could almost be believed as real first appeared on YouTube in 2013. It was created by a YouTube user named cheliara and published on Sept. 23, 2013. The video amassed just under 300,000 views in the last four years; not a small number by any means, but not overly successful either. Cheliara mentioned in the video’s description that it was a project she made for class. This may not seem important, but it’s actually pretty crucial. … [Read more...] about Why do people keep falling for the same fake Friends movie trailer on YouTube?
Twitch has signed a deal with Disney to secure exclusive content from some of the entertainment giant's top YouTubers, including Markiplier and Jacksepticeye. A total of four YouTubers (with a combined total of over 44 million subscribers, no less), are involved in the deal, and each will manage their own channels on Twitch. All are part of the Disney Digital Network, formerly known as Maker Studios. Markiplier, Jacksepticeye, Strawburry17, and LuzuGames, will livestream and create exclusive video-on-demand content for Twitch, as part of a multi-year partnership. Some of this content will debut today. But there's no suggestion the above stars will depart YouTube entirely. The announcement comes alongside the launch of Twitch's new Video Producer creator tools designed to somewhat shift the site's focus away from streaming, and give creators "more options, more control, and more opportunities to find viewers, grow an audience, and make a living doing what they love". While streaming … [Read more...] about Twitch inks deal to broadcast exclusive content from top Disney YouTubers
YouTube is beginning to punish Logan Paul in the wake of controversy. The company announced today that it will not move forward with a planned YouTube Red movie that Paul was supposed to star in at this time as the project is on hold. The Thinning: New World Order was supposed to be the sequel to Paul’s 2016 YouTube Red movie, The Thinning. A YouTube representative also confirmed to Polygon he is removed from Google’s top tier preferred ad program. “In light of recent events, we have decided to remove Logan Paul’s channels from Google Preferred,” a YouTube representative said. Additionally, we will not feature Logan in season 4 of ‘Foursome’ and his new Originals are on hold. Paul was the subject of internet-wide backlash after he uploaded a video on Dec. 31, 2017 during a trip to Japan, in which he discovered and filmed the body of man who appeared to have recently committed suicide. Paul later removed and apologized for the video, before … [Read more...] about YouTube removes Logan Paul from top-tier Google ad platform, YouTube Red projects on hold
I attended my first E3 back in 1995 and have sat through dozens of media presentations. To me, they're like a secret language of anxiety and folly. Below, I’ve shared my thoughts on this year's installment. Last week, my colleague Brian Crecente wrote a cogent piece about the practical and commercial point of E3, and how it might face an uncertain future. After a few days of slogging around E3’s media presentations, I’m intrigued by a slightly different question: Why the hell do we do this to ourselves? I’m especially interested by the so-called media events staged by companies like Electronic Arts, Microsoft, Sony, Bethesda and Ubisoft. These quasi-press conferences require enormous expenditure, mass discomfort and long waits. The amount of new, valuable information they contain is negligible, especially considering the wealth of alternative methods, as demonstrated by Nintendo Direct and various other strategies used by companies all through the year. They … [Read more...] about E3’s bizarre, bombastic media events
Update: YouTube confirmed to Polygon today that it removed Logan Paul from its top-tier Google Preferred ad program, adding that all of his YouTube Red projects are on hold. YouTube released a statement yesterday condemning Logan Paul’s controversial video, acknowledging the vlog was in violation of community guidelines and claiming the company did everything it could to rectify the situation. The statement was released over a series of tweets, but this is the most important part: We expect more of the creators who build their community on @YouTube, as we’re sure you do too. The channel violated our community guidelines, we acted accordingly, and we are looking at further consequences. Despite the company saying it “acted accordingly,” YouTube clearly didn’t. Between when Paul’s original video was published on Dec. 31, and the time it was taken down on Jan. 2, there were a series of events that occurred that had little to do with YouTube. An … [Read more...] about YouTube’s open letter regarding Logan Paul is full of excuses, not ownership
