Rapper 2 Milly, who said in November that he was considering legal action against Epic Games for its use of his Milly Rock dance in Fortnite, has followed through and filed a lawsuit against the company. Posted by the Hollywood Reporter (via Gamasutra), the lawsuit says Epic "capitalized on the Milly Rock's popularity, particularly with its younger fans" by selling it as the "Swipe It" emote, but did not credit or compensate 2 Milly, or seek his permission to use it. The suit begins by detailing the pop-culture popularity of both Milly Rock and Fortnite, before going on to explain the basics of Fortnite's monetization: The game is free, but in-game transactions enable the purchase of items such skins, clothes, and emotes of various rarities and costs. "Emotes are incredibly popular and are fundamental to Fortnite's success. Players purchase emotes, alongside clothing and skins, to personalize their Fortnite experience," the suit says. "Emotes have also become popular outside … [Read more...] about 2 Milly sues Epic Games over Fortnite’s ‘Swipe It’ dance emote

Today, Epic announced their new platform for selling games on PC and Mac. The Epic Games Store launches this year with a hand-curated set of games on PC and Mac, before opening up to more games and platforms, including Android in 2019.Epic plans to compete with Steam by letting developers take home 88% of all revenue. Epic’s 12% cut is considerably less than Valve’s 30% cut of all Steam sales. The image below, released by Epic, shows how revenue is divided on Steam and the Epic Games Store. Note that the Unity fees do not include up-front licensing costs, so those numbers may be different in reality. Epic is further incentivizing developers that are using Unreal Engine 4. If you’re using Unreal Engine for your game, “Epic will cover the 5% engine royalty for sales on the Epic Games store, out of Epic’s 12%”. However, you won’t be excluded if you use Unreal 4. Rapper 2 Milly is considering legal action against Epic Games for using his signature dance move, The Milly Rock, in Fortnite, although you might know it better as Season 5 premium emote, "Swipe It"."Everybody was just like, 'Yo, your dance is in the game,'" 2 Milly told CBS News (via ResetEra). "They actually sell that particular move. It's for purchase. That's when I really was like ... oh nah, this can't go on too long."For several months now, the artists behind some of the moves have been calling on Fortnite developer Epic to compensate them, or at least "put the actual rap songs behind the dances that make so much money as Emotes". However, as business and entertainment lawyer Merlyne Jean-Louis notes in the CBS story, there's no case law setting a precedent for copyrighting choreographic works and the US Copyright Office currently cannot accept copyright patents for individual dance moves due to creative choreographic expression. "There's a lot of case lawsuits surrounding the … [Read more...] about Rapper considers legal action against Epic Games for using his dance moves in Fortnite

I’m joking!” the presenter continued, before the music abruptly stopped and he revealed that Blizzard was the real winner.
