Sadly, Electronic Arts has announced that Patrick Söderlund has left in order to start a new chapter in his career. Söderlund has been at Electronic Arts for twelve long years, serving as CEO of DICE and later chief design officer of EA. Electronic Arts’ CEO Andrew Wilson has shared the news with his team through a heartfelt note on the company’s website. No reason for his departure has been stated, however, Wilson pointed out that Söderlund will “begin a new chapter later this year”. NBA Live 19, launching in September, will allow users to create women players for the first time in series history. Female or male, players will have the same experiences in the game’s single-player career suite, “The One,” EA Sports announced today. Female players will also be able to scan themselves into the game (using a companion app on iOS or Android mobile devices) to embark on their virtual careers. NBA Live 19 will also offer abilities and perks modeled on stars from the women’s game, such as Candace Parker, the five-time all-star for the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks. A news release from Electronic Arts said women players will have the same experience as men in “The One,” including building up a team, completing challenges, and earning skills, progression and gear. Microsoft has given Xbox head Phil Spencer a vote of confidence, promoting him to executive vice president of gaming. In return, Spencer will be expected to solve the company’s immediate problem: The Xbox One doesn’t have enough big-name exclusives. As we tumble into the mass-consumer era of this console generation, the Xbox One is far behind the PlayStation 4 in terms of global install base. Microsoft refuses to release hardware sales numbers, but analysts we spoke to estimate the Xbox One at around 35 million, compared to the PlayStation 4 at more than 73 million. That yawning 2-to-1 disparity is unlikely to get better this year. A look at the two companies’ 2018 exclusives roster makes for grim reading, at least for Xbox fans. The Yankees’ home uniform, a simple design featuring thin navy stripes on a white background, is an enduring classic: It has barely changed in more than a century. Basic though it is, the pinstriped design presents some challenges for the makers of baseball video games. The first time Taylor Kurosaki and Bob Rafei saw a running PlayStation, they were in a Las Vegas hotel room. It was the 1995 Consumer Electronics Show. They, along with the company they worked for, Naughty Dog, were being given a behind-closed-doors look at Sony's first foray into the game console industry. When they describe the event now, they use words like "inspiring" and "enthralled" and phrases like "blown away." They didn't know it at the time, but the members of Naughty Dog in that room — Kurosaki, Rafei and co-founders Jason Rubin and Andy Gavin — were looking at the system that would host the team's next game: Crash Bandicoot. They were seeing the console their company would eventually create the unofficial mascot for — the console they would develop Naughty Dog's first smash hit for.
