Read your future with 22 videogame interpretations of the Tarot
If you've ever come across the Tarot, it's probably as a means of telling the future. A cousin of modern playing cards that dates back to the 15th century, the Tarot consists of four suites of numbered Minor Arcana cards and a Major Arcana of trumps depicting archetypal characters and concepts, such as Death or the Empress. Each card is dense with possible interpretations that can be hypnotic to unravel, even if you don't take the divination thing seriously. Videogame developers among other artmakers have seized upon the Tarot as both a motif and a creative tool: Tarot-esque designs appear in fantasy RPGs like Dragon Age: Inquisition, and studios like Ice Water Games use them as a source of quickfire inspiration. A common Tarot fortune-telling method is to draw three cards and use them to explore answers to a question, like “will there ever be a proper Legacy of Kain revival”. This is also how you'll unlock games in Cartomancy , a full-blown indie collection of 22 games from … [Read more...] about Read your future with 22 videogame interpretations of the Tarot
GTA 6 Will Set “New Creative Benchmarks” For All Entertainment, Take-Two Says
Take-Two, the owner of Rockstar Games, has commented briefly on GTA 6. As part of Take-Two's latest earnings briefing , CEO Strauss Zelnick said development on GTA 6--or whatever the next entry in the series is called--is "well underway." This is the same exact wording that Rockstar itself used when announcing GTA 6 back in February of this year. Zelnick went on to say that the development team at Rockstar Games is trying to make GTA 6 be another standout success in the series and across the wider entertainment sector. "Rockstar Games team is determined to once again set creative benchmarks for the series, our industry, and for all entertainment, just as the label has done with every one of their frontline releases," Zelnick said. Very little is known about GTA 6, but rumor has it that the game will feature two lead characters, one of whom is a Latina woman . The game is rumored to take place in Vice City on a map that will continuously expand over time. The game is said to … [Read more...] about GTA 6 Will Set “New Creative Benchmarks” For All Entertainment, Take-Two Says
Is $300M for Tomb Raider and Deus Ex really that big of a steal?
When I heard that Square Enix had sold Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, and three respected game studios to Embracer Group for $300 million, I instantly became that guy who knows exactly how much everything is worth but can only back up his valuations with rhetorical questions. $300 million? For Tomb Raider? And Deus Ex? Are they serious? It seems like a steal for Embracer, but in retrospect, just because my dad knows who Lara Croft is doesn't necessarily mean that the series is going to be profitable in the future. Sexy British artifact thieves are unfashionable—people want to play as miserable wretches named The Tarnished these days—and the kind of games Eidos-Montréal and Crystal Dynamics are best at making are very expensive to produce. Eidos-Montréal studio head David Anfossi said in 2018 (opens in new tab) that Shadow of the Tomb Raider cost as much as $100 million to make, and another $35 million to promote. It was half-off during Steam's Autumn Sale the same year it … [Read more...] about Is $300M for Tomb Raider and Deus Ex really that big of a steal?
Overwatch will stop selling loot boxes this month
Audio player loading… We have Valve to thank for the introduction of paid loot boxes in PC gaming, but the loot box trend didn't really kick off until Overwatch made box-opening fun, cool, and sometimes free in 2016. Six years later, Overwatch is one of the only popular games left pushing loot boxes, but not for much longer. To prepare for the day that Overwatch 2 ditches loot boxes forever, Blizzard will cease selling them in Overwatch 1 later this month. Blizzard is sunsetting loot boxes (opens in new tab) during the third chapter of its Anniversary Remix event that kicks off today. The three-week promotion features a handful of legendary skin recolors based on old favorites. Some can be earned through play, while others have to be bought with in-game coins or earned through loot boxes. Players can still purchase loot boxes directly to increase their chances, but Blizzard will close the doors on loot box sales on August 30. Throughout September players will still be … [Read more...] about Overwatch will stop selling loot boxes this month
Overwatch Loot Box Sales Will End August 30
Loot boxes in Overwatch will no longer be available for purchase following the conclusion of the game's Anniversary Remix Vol. 3 event on August 30, Blizzard has confirmed. While players won't be able to purchase loot boxes directly after the aforementioned date, loot boxes can still be earned through leveling up and other in-game activities for the next few months, a Blizzard blog post states. All loot boxes in a player's inventory will automatically open prior to the launch of Overwatch 2 on October 4. The news comes as part of the shooter's final Anniversary Remix event, which is now live. Like the two previous Anniversary Remix events , Vol. 3 brings a rotation of all the game's seasonal event brawls, exclusive recolors of various skins, and a return of formerly one-time event skins that can be earned by playing matches. Once Overwatch 2 arrives, it will be ditching the first game's loot box system in favor of a battle pass and the ability to purchase cosmetics … [Read more...] about Overwatch Loot Box Sales Will End August 30
Overwatch Anniversary Remix: Vol 3 Event Now Live – Rewards And Schedule
Overwatch is on the way out, to be replaced October 4 by Overwatch 2 . But Blizzard has given its first shooter a proper sendoff with its various Anniversary Remix events over the course of 2022, the third and final of which is live now until August 30. Anniversary Remix Vol. 3 once again brings back all of the game's past seasonal event brawls and cosmetics alongside another chance to earn a few previously one-time-only challenge skins. Like previous Anniversary events, you will simply need to play a set number of matches each week to earn event challenge player icons, sprays, and skins. There are even a few event-exclusive recolors of existing legendary skins up for grabs, though you'll have to either purchase them with in-game currency or get lucky and earn them in a loot box. Speaking of loot boxes, August 30 will be your last opportunity to buy them . Though they can still be earned through gameplay prior to the arrival of Overwatch 2, once Blizzard's sequel arrives, it … [Read more...] about Overwatch Anniversary Remix: Vol 3 Event Now Live – Rewards And Schedule
The big games from the last decade we forgot ever existed
Sometimes a game crashes and burns so loudly that it's impossible to ignore. But for others—following a flashy marketing campaign, maybe some preview events or E3 presentations—the release date passes, and soon after that they might as well cease to exist. They're played and reviewed, sure. And someone, somewhere, probably even loved them. But for the rest of us, they're forgotten until years later when someone mentions their name and we go, "Oh, yeah! That game! I forgot that came out." Here are some of the last decade's biggest games that disappeared from the public consciousness. Paragon Released: August 2016. Why we were excited: As someone who always bounced off MOBAs, like many others I had hopes that Epic's big-budget in-house entry into the genre, with its third-person shooter presentation, would be my best chance to finally become someone who understands what "jungling" means. Why we forgot it: Paragon had an identity problem. In response to … [Read more...] about The big games from the last decade we forgot ever existed
Minecraft ocean bases are a delicate balance of slick design and looming disaster
Scrambling around trying to build a base is always the highest priority on Minecraft's survival checklist. If you're like me, your first base was probably a haphazardly thrown-together oak block box with enough space for a bed, crafting table, and my blocky body to squeeze into. But Minecraft bases have become much more than that, and builders have been experimenting with all kinds of impressive designs like huge underground lairs, epic treehouses, or grand stone fortresses. There have been plenty of spectacular Minecraft builds (opens in new tab) , but one design that continues to blow my mind are ocean bases. In short, the water physics in Minecraft are hard to grapple with. The way water flows and fills spaces is pretty confusing and thinking about how the current of one water block is affected by its four horizontal and vertical neighbours is headache-inducing. That's why it's always impressive to see ocean builds. The engineering and design that have gone into building … [Read more...] about Minecraft ocean bases are a delicate balance of slick design and looming disaster
Here’s How The Summer Box Office Compares To Pre-Pandemic Numbers
The movie theate business was one of the worst hit when the COVID-19 pandemic shut the world down in 2020, suffering both from lockdowns and ongoing studio delays once theatres were allowed to open again. Based on summer box office numbers, it looks like the industry is recovering well, though it still has a while to go to reach pre-pandemic numbers. Variety reported the numbers in a feature that also interviewed theater owners for their outlook on the industry. According to Comscore statistics, the total box office take for the summer was $3.027 billion, only 17.5% down on 2019 numbers. The summer earnings showed an improvement of 134.6% compared to the same period last year, and a huge increase on 2020's lockdown-affected summer. The season's success has been attributed to recent blockbusters like Jurassic World Dominion, Lightyear, Elvis, and Top Gun: Maverick, which recently made its way into the top-ten earning films of all time . Other big earners include Everything … [Read more...] about Here’s How The Summer Box Office Compares To Pre-Pandemic Numbers
