Every month we run exclusive features exploring the world of PC gaming—from behind-the-scenes previews, to incredible community stories, to fascinating interviews, and more. It's easy to forget about where we came from in PC gaming, especially when we're arguing over gigabytes of memory and teraflops of performance. But there's actually a lot that we can glean from the annals of GPU history—the colossal leaps in power that GPUs have taken in under 25 years goes some way to explaining why today's top graphics card costs $1,499. You have to walk before you can run, and there were many attempts to nail an image resolution of just 800x600 before anyone could dream up the pixel count required for the latest games at 4K. Yet you'd also be surprised by just how many features so prevalent in modern GPUs were first introduced back at the dawn of the industry. But let's start right at the … [Read more...] about The graphics cards that helped define PC gaming

The evolution of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ looks over the decades
'Heroes in a half shell' is a pretty apt description of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Our favorite foursome (now a fivesome) has stood the test of time with what seems like only minor costume updates over the decades - but those changes were monumental in their impact. In the long history of TMNT, the turtles have morphed and changed to fit the time, and despite their relative sameness, their popularity and cultural impact haven't diminished. Black-and-white origins (and their shortcomings) The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were launched by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman in 1984 as a humble black-and-white independent comic that seems far removed from the colorful franchise we know of today. Back then, the brothers were ruthless ninja that stalked New York streets in search of the Foot. The character designs were rough and kinetic, soaked in black ink and dripping with attitude. With their introduction, however, came an issue; you couldn't tell the turtles apart without … [Read more...] about The evolution of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ looks over the decades
Legendary Green Arrow creator’s son to help celebrate character’s 80th anniversary
The release of DC's June 2021 solicitations has revealed a new contributor to June 29's Green Arrow 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular #1. Not mentioned in the special's original announcement , DC added the name Larry O'Neil to the list of writers. If the surname sounds familiar, you've hit the bullseye. Larry O'Neil is the son of Denny O'Neil, the legendary DC writer and editor who passed away in 2020 and is the creator (along with writer/artist Mike Grell in the '80s) who has arguably most defined the current and most recognizable incarnation of Green Arrow. Once a sort-of happy-go-lucky Batman with a bow with his own 'boy wonder' Speedy, in a late '60's Justice League story O'Neil stripped Oliver Queen of his millionaire playboy status and transformed him into a socially conscious, politically left-wing activist , a depiction that most famously helped drive the legendary '70s Green Lantern/Green Arrow "Hard-Traveling Heroes" run (Green … [Read more...] about Legendary Green Arrow creator’s son to help celebrate character’s 80th anniversary
The evolution of Resident Evil’s combat, from clunky tank controls to slick first-person survival horror
Resident Evil is no stranger to mutation. Capcom reflects the unsuspecting citizens of Raccoon City in this respect, genetically morphing over time in response to viral and environmental factors beyond its control. But where those caught up in the aftermath of the Mansion Incident can blame the T-virus for slow decay and eventual regeneration, Capcom doesn't have an Umbrella Corporation of its own to point to. Resident Evil has endured a perpetual cycle of trial and error since it made its debut 25 years ago. It has adapted to change and forced the industry to change alongside it. To look at the evolution of Resident Evil's combat over the last 25 years is to look at a series that isn't afraid to innovate and iterate. The publisher hasn't always been successful in this endeavor, but its willingness to at least try is likely a reason why the Resident Evil series is as potent today as it was when it made its debut in 1996. Glass Tanks Key Games: Resident Evil (1996), … [Read more...] about The evolution of Resident Evil’s combat, from clunky tank controls to slick first-person survival horror
