When Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red promised none of its employees would have to work overtime to get the game done, did this also apply to the many developers working on parts of the game at its support studios? As far as Cyberpunk is confirmed, well, that point is now all moot . But it's an interesting question, and as pretty much every big budget game employs support studios, it's a topic well worth exploring. This month, Chris Bratt (who?) does just that in the latest video from the Patreon-funded People Make Games . In it, we hear from young developers working unpaid overtime on numerous big AAA projects, in support studios based in Malaysia and Indonesia. There are tales of 70-hour weeks and employers cutting corners when it comes to overtime pay and time off in compensation for working public holidays, and of fresh graduates putting up with poor conditions for the hope of a better gig in the future. Another interesting point is that even if one outsourcing … [Read more...] about A look at how big budget game developers outsource crunch

AMD shows the Radeon RX 6700 XT outpacing Nvidia’s RTX 3070 in selected games
AMD has officially unveiled the speeds and feeds of its latest GPU, the Radeon RX 6700 XT . It transpires that the rumours were right on this one, and there's only a single GPU on the way, not the usual XT and non-XT variants. AMD also provided a few benchmarks to get our heads around. The first slide to feature benchmarks had comparisons against the GTX 1070 Ti and the RTX 20870 Super, which had us worried about how it would fair against more recent releases, but thankfully it quickly followed this up with comparisons to the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti and the RTX 3070 . That first slide does show how far we've come though, and AMD is at least definitely in the game at this stage. The fact it has a GPU that can beat the RTX 2080 Super at 1440p is nothing to be sniffed at. When it comes to the more up-to-date graphics cards, things look fairly healthy, although we'd recommend the usual pinch of sodium chloride, as AMD may have cherry-picked these games to some extent. Not … [Read more...] about AMD shows the Radeon RX 6700 XT outpacing Nvidia’s RTX 3070 in selected games
CohhCarnage spent 140 hours building an epic Valheim base, here’s what he learned
Building a home in Valheim is easy, but making it both stylish and functional? Surprisingly tough. Twitch streamer Ben 'CohhCarnage' Cassell knows this all too well. He's spent nearly 140 hours playing Valheim since it launched and, in addition to slaying its five bosses and exploring most of its world, he has also constructed one of the most impressive Valheim bases I've seen . It's a sprawling coastal fortress complete with stone walls, a moat, great hall, kitchen, lighthouse, boathouse, crafting stations—you get the idea. It's a Viking dream home that makes Valhalla look like a condemned, inner-city condo. Cassell isn't the only one gifted with godly architectural skills, either. Go to the Valheim subreddit and you'll find everything from ornate wizard towers to a full-scale Millennium Falcon . Seeing all these elaborate forts might make your own base look like a not-so-great hall, though. So earlier this week I sat down with Cassell to steal all the … [Read more...] about CohhCarnage spent 140 hours building an epic Valheim base, here’s what he learned
No Man’s Sky will have multiplayer crossplay when it drops on Xbox Game Pass
No Man's Sky is adding cross-platform multiplayer starting June 11, the same day the title goes live on Xbox and PC Game Pass. "Do you have a friend on another gaming system with whom you’ve always wanted to explore the great unknown? A legendary base you’ve seen videos of but never been able to visit? A mission that you think would be great to play with friends on other platforms?" blog post announcing the move. As GamesRadar previously reported , No Man's Sky (formerly a PlayStation console exclusive) is the June addition to Xbox Game Pass, which means it will be available for Windows 10 operating systems as well. With the added bonus of crossplay, players from all platforms can do some planet mining in tandem and alien riding. It's great to see how No Man's Sky has evolved as an IP since it launched in 2016. First it was just a PlayStation exclusive with a more traditional multiplayer construct. Then, it went to Xbox in 2018 and in 2019 the Beyond update … [Read more...] about No Man’s Sky will have multiplayer crossplay when it drops on Xbox Game Pass
Yakuza Creator Hints At Trying Something New
The creator of the Yakuza series says it may be time for the development team to try something entirely new, after so many years devoted to the franchise. In an interview, Ryu Ga Gotoku director Toshihiro Nagoshi talks about his hope that he can allow his team to stretch their development muscles. "The Ryu Ga Gotoku team members, they've only really worked on the Yakuza series," Nagoshi told Game Informer . "But I think it would be a waste if these really talented team members that we have aren't able to use all of their skills to their full potential. That might be challenging themselves, creating something of a whole different genre and a different style. We don't know that yet, but that’s something that we're really taking into consideration right now for the growth of our team as a whole." Ryu Ga Gotoku has dabbled in new genres within the Yakuza universe--it explored the other side of crime dramas with Judgment , and turned its latest Yakuza game, Yakuza: Like a Dragon , … [Read more...] about Yakuza Creator Hints At Trying Something New
