The ongoing NFL controversy regarding protests during the national anthem is, at its heart, a request to be heard. The players who knelt during the national anthem last year weren’t doing so to disrespect the flag, but to bring attention to causes of systemic racism and social injustice. And while President Trump inflamed passions against the protesters last fall — and many times since — by trying to paint the silent, nonviolent protests as unpatriotic, he struck a different tone recently, offering to listen to the players’ grievances. And now, in a New York Times editorial, four players — Doug Baldwin, Malcolm Jenkins, Anquan Boldin, and Benjamin Watson — have taken the president up on his offer. What was Trump’s offer to NFL players?Earlier this month, shortly after pardoning Alice Johnson, 63, who was serving a life sentence for a nonviolent drug offense, Trump made an offer that, based on his prior rhetoric, was nothing short of … [Read more...] about Four NFL players respond to Trump’s request for inmates to pardon
Former Cardinals pitcher Bob Tewksbury may have St. Louis’ own Yogi Berra to thank for the title of “Ninety Percent Mental.” Tewksbury quotes Berra as once observing in his unique way: “Baseball is 90 percent mental. The other half is physical.”The mental part forms the theme of this book, and Tewksbury has the credentials to write about it (with help from Scott Miller, a sportswriter). After all, Tewksbury serves as the mental skills coach for the San Francisco Giants and once held the same post with the Boston Red Sox.Tewksbury notes that mental skills coaching began eight decades ago: “Coleman Griffith, commonly remembered today as America’s first sports psychologist, was hired by owner Philip K. Wrigley to work with the Chicago Cubs. That didn’t go well,” mainly because Cubs manager Charlie Grimm ordered his players to shun Griffith. But mental skills coaching caught on again in the 1980s, and most of today’s major league … [Read more...] about Former Cardinals pitcher writes about the mental side of baseball
Major League Baseball’s opening day is today — yes, you read that correctly. It is the earliest the season has ever started, and only the sixth time in the past 100 years the season has opened on a Thursday. Twenty-eight of the 30 clubs are playing, also a record. (Cincinnati and Detroit would have made it a full 30, but, hey, weather happened.) Out Of The Park Baseball, the acclaimed management simulation for Windows PC, Mac and Linux, provided official predictions for MLB Network last night, supplementing about a dozen panelists (among them MLB The Show 18 announcers Matt Vasgersian and Dan Plesac). But where those panelists are giving a single gut call before the first of 162 games for each team are played, OOTP 19 ran 1,000 simulations. Based on the frequency of the outcomes, Out of the Park Baseball 19 predicts this for the 2018 MLB season, as related last night on MLB Network: The Cleveland Indians win the American League pennant, and the Los Angeles Dodgers the … [Read more...] about MLB’s stat-crunchingest video game predicts a World Series win for L.A.
