A new money laundering scheme has been uncovered within the gaming industry. This time though, it doesn’t involve a specific investor or corporation, but rather the abuse of the in-game currency of Fortnite.Uncovered by The Independent, cybercriminals have been using Fortnite to shift money stolen from credit cards off of the dark web. The stolen cards are used to buy V-bucks, the virtual currency in Fortnite. Typically, V-bucks are purchased to buy in-game outfits, weapons, emotes and other items in-game. For Fortnite and Epic Games, V-bucks have been a massive revenue stream, with over $3 billion net profit for Epic Games in 2018. For cybercriminals, V-bucks are purchased off of the stolen cards and then re-sold for a net profit off of the dark web at a discount rate. This allows the stolen money to be “cleaned,” in other words, made more legitimate through a standard transaction. Most of these transactions are done through cryptocurrencies as well, … [Read more...] about Money Laundering Scheme Uncovered Using Fortnite V-Bucks

Yeah, peace on Earth and goodwill to all men… what a crock. This year has been a bust for PC gaming, there’s no getting around it, and it’s put me in an almost permanent grump. Ho, ho, frickin’ ho. Sure, if you’ve got yourself a little PS4 backup plumbed into your telebox then you’ll likely still be very happy about how 2018 turned out for you, but if you’re a purestrain PC gamer then very little will have made you smile over the last 12 months. Not even the constant churn of ‘Tubers being deservedly raked over the coals for acting inappropriately or doing another racism. I mean, what was your game of the year? For us it’s been all but impossible to look at the triple-A titles released this year and pick one above all else. Okay, for me I’m still loving Battlefield V, but that’s less for the actual game and more about it representing the future of PC graphics. Look at the rays on that, etc. Thankfully there have been a … [Read more...] about Forget 2018… Fortnite and graphics card mining ruined it for everyone
Have you heard of HoweyCoin? It's "one of the largest cryptocurrency platforms ever built" and has the backing of several celebrities. It's also officially registered with the US government and will trade on an SEC-compliant exchange where you can buy and sell them for profit, though you can score a discount if you take advantage of the coin's pre-ICO sale. There's only one problem—HoweyCoin is fake, and none of those claims are true. The US Securities and Exchange Commission created HoweyCoin and an accompanying website hyping its perks so that investors will know some of the red flags to look for before pouring money into a potentially fraudulent ICO, or initial coin offering. It's a bit of an unusual move for the decades old agency, which as The Wall Street Journal points out is not exactly known for being all that plugged in to the digital communications scene. But with the rise of fraudulent ICOs, the SEC felt compelled to step in and issue a cleverly constructed … [Read more...] about SEC created a fake cryptocurrency site to warn investors of ICO scams

What is believed to be the biggest cryptocurrency marketplace hack ever has just occurred in Japan, where digital thieves made off with over half a billion dollars worth of NEM (XEM) tokens, CoinDesk reports. It's difficult to pin an exact dollar figure on the theft, since the value fluctuates. What we know is hackers stole 500 million NEM tokens from Coincheck's digital wallets. The exchange's president Wakata Yoshihiro and chief operating officer Yusuke Otsuka estimated the loss at 58 billion yen, or around $533 million. Other estimates peg the loss a bit lower at around $420 million, and some have it as high as $600 million. Regardless of the official tally, it's a major theft, surpassing the ~$340 million that was famously stolen from Mt. Gox in 2014. However, the impact on the cryptocurrency market at large probably won't be as big, given that the overall market cap is much bigger now than it was over three years ago. Following the breach, Coincheck put a halt on NEM trading, … [Read more...] about Over $500 million in cryptocurrency stolen
