What are the best strategy games? It’s a daunting question to answer, with the genre spanning back almost as long as humans have been playing games. Even if we’re just limiting ourselves to the digital variety, there are dozens and dozens of RTSes, 4Xes, wargames, and grand strategy paragons worthy of high praise. After much consideration, they’ve been narrowed down to the best of the best. In terms of classification, this list contains games in which strategy is the primary concern – or at least one of a handful of primary concerns. Sure, I can embroil myself in drama and intrigue just as well as the next aristocrat, but when it comes to ambition—to expanding my kingdom and crushing my enemies—it almost always goes wrong. To counter this failing, I’ve devised a new strategy: don’t play Crusader Kings II. At least, don’t play it directly. Instead, I’m going to pick a character and use the ‘observe’ console command to hand them over to the AI. Then, as the computer does all the heavy lifting, I’ll offer support in the form of other … [Read more...] about Crusader Kings 2 diary: How far can one AI go using wits, skill, and lots of cheats?

Paradox Interactive is making tabletop games, starting with four of its most iconic strategy franchises. Paradox announced the news earlier today, alongside the Kickstarter campaign for Crusader Kings, the first of the four games that are getting the tabletop treatment. Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron, and Cities: Skylines are up next. The publisher will be working with “a series of proven board game designers,” starting with Swedish tabletop game publisher, Free League, who developed award-winning RPGs Tales from the Loop, Coriolis – The Third Horizon, and Mutant: Year Zero. “In this medieval strategy soap opera, your King or Queen will need to survive invasions, plots, crusades, and even marriage. Or at least have children, siblings or spouses standing by to take over the throne. Failure to raise a suitable heir could face you with the end of your dynasty,” reads the press release. “Crusader Kings – The Board Game is not an attempt to … [Read more...] about Paradox is making tabletop games for their popular strategy titles, starting with Crusader Kings
