UPDATE your iPhone or Android phone now if you don't want to risk it falling prey to hackers that can swipe your messages, experts are warning. A potentially critical flaw is affecting Bluetooth, leaving hundreds of millions or billions of devices exposed to cyber-criminals. Apple, Google and Intel's hardware are among those at risk if not updated immediately, according to Carnegie Mellon's US Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT). It tells of a vulnerability that impacts the data encryption process over Bluetooth connections, which let you securely transfer files between two paired devices wirelessly over short distances. Or at least it should be secure. The flaw arises from a missing check on keys while data is encrypting, specifically an absent validation contained in the Diffie-Hellman (ECDH) key exchange. These are the "keys" that your device and the one you're pairing with exchange to lock down communications so that outsiders can't decipher the data you're transmitting. … [Read more...] about iPhone and Android HACK warning – update your phones now or anyone can read your messages

With the debut of Metal Gear Survive, one of gaming’s longest-running franchises closes the book on one era and begins a new one. For nearly three decades, Metal Gear held a unique place among video game sagas. The series debuted in 1987 as the brainchild of a young designer by the name of Hideo Kojima, and — with just a few exceptions — Kojima shepherded each entry through the years. Unfortunately, Kojima underwent a messy divorce from Metal Gear publisher Konami toward the end of development on 2016’s Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, and the two have parted ways. So as Metal Gear embarks on its post-Kojima journey with a multiplayer survival game that bears little meaningful connection to the long-running tale of Solid Snake, Big Boss and the lumbering nuclear missile robots for which the series is named, I took the opportunity to go back over all 21 official Metal Gear games that Konami has released in America through the years, ranking them from worst … [Read more...] about Ranking the Metal Gear series
It's the weekend, which means it's time for the PCG Q&A. We ask a question to our PC Gamer writers, then you answer the same question in the comments below. This week brings out the worst in us all: What's the meanest thing you've done in a game? Wes Fenlon: Knights of the Old Republic Knights of the Old Republic 2 took a nuanced look at the differences between the light and dark sides of the Force, challenging what you think of as good and bad and the justifications for your actions. It was thoughtful enough to make me strive to be better, to do what I thought was the right thing, even when that thing had complicated repercussions. But the original KotOR wasn't that thoughtful, and its more traditional light vs. dark breakdown made the dark side way more fun. The powers! The powers were so much better. And the rewards were, too! Why do a fetch quest for some dumb alien for 100 credits, when I could then bully him into giving me 200? Why would I listen to … [Read more...] about What’s the meanest thing you’ve done in a game?
Dr Disrespect, the self-proclaimed "face of Twitch" and an insanely popular streamer, was confronted yesterday for his ongoing use of racial stereotypes intended to mock the Chinese players he sometimes encounters in Playerunknown's Battlegrounds. For almost a year now, Dr Disrespect has been belittling players with Asian usernames or accents by speaking in what he calls a "hybrid" language meant to sound like he's speaking a Chinese dialect (combined with other Asian languages, as if they are interchangeable) when in fact he's just speaking total gibberish. Musician Jimmy Wong, brother of YouTuber Freddie Wong and actor in popular YouTube series like Video Game High School, cut together several clips of Dr Disrespect's behavior towards Chinese players in a tweet that quickly gained traction as people weighed in over whether or not the behavior was indeed problematic or just inoffensive comedy. "Young and extremely impressionable kids adore these influencers," Wong wrote in a … [Read more...] about Popular streamer Dr Disrespect defends use of racially insensitive fake Asian language
When discussing PlayStation history, many rightly point to figures like Ken Kutaragi, who led the creation of the first three PlayStation consoles, as well as Andrew House and Kaz Hirai, who have overseen the PlayStation business in recent years — amongst others. But with a company as large as Sony, there have been many key figures who have never become public names, even at the highest levels of the company. One name you don’t hear as much is Shigeo Maruyama, the former chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment and, before that, the CEO of Sony Music Entertainment. Maruyama played a key role in getting the original PlayStation off the ground, and generally did so behind the scenes, nurturing talent and setting up Sony Computer Entertainment in the first place. Now 76 years-old, having been retired for the past 10, Maruyama recently sat down for a chat with Polygon, alongside my former boss, Tetsuya Mizuguchi, a friend and fan of Maruyama’s dating back to the … [Read more...] about The original PlayStation boss
