AMD's CPU prospects underwent a massive change last year with the release of the Ryzen family of processors. Today, just over a year after the initial launch of Ryzen 7, AMD is ready for round two. Using an improved 12nm manufacturing process and promising higher clockspeeds and improved performance compared to last year's models, the new Ryzen 7 2700X is the jewel in AMD's crown. It also comes with a reduced launch price compared to last year, effectively taking the place of both the 1800X and 1700X. Add to this an improved X470 chipset and mature motherboards that eliminate of the teething pains that plagued the first gen parts, and AMD gets the trifecta of performance, pricing, and reliability. But is it enough to topple Intel's Coffee Lake processors from their top spot? That depends on what you're planning to do with your PC. Ryzen 7 initially offered double the core and thread counts of Intel's Kaby Lake parts, effectively forcing Intel to move beyond the 4-core limit that has … [Read more...] about AMD Ryzen 7 2700X is better than its predecessors in every way

Microsoft restarted its programme of Xbox One X enhancements for Xbox 360 games this week with four new titles - Forza Horizon, The Witcher 2, Crackdown and Fable Anniversary Edition. We're seeing the same 9x resolution boost on all releases in concert with improved performance where appropriate, but it's the first game in this new line-up that's our focus today. Image quality in Forza Horizon is off the charts in the transition to ultra HD and there are a couple of further, surprising enhancements that caught our eye. One of the last first party exclusives for Xbox 360, Forza Horizon was a landmark title - a successful collaboration between franchise founders Turn 10 and UK-based start-up Playground Games. While retaining its signature 360Hz physics simulation technology, Playground revamped the Forza Motorsport 4 engine, adding time of day lighting based on over 200 variables to FM4's existing, beautiful image-based lighting and its gamma correct pipeline. The open world concept was … [Read more...] about The original Forza Horizon looks stunning on Xbox One X at 4K
Shaun McCabe is the game director for Ratchet & Clank (PS4), and the production director at Insomniac Games’ studio in Durham, North Carolina. Chad Dezern is the Creative Director for Ratchet & Clank (PS4), and the studio director of the North Carolina location. The two also co-directed Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One (2011), Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault (2012), Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus (2013). *** Sure, it seems obvious now. Of course there should be a Ratchet & Clank game to tie in with the major motion picture. But Ratchet & Clank for the PlayStation 4—designed as a killer one-two punch alongside the film, the ultimate version of an origin story—didn’t always seem like such a great idea. Of course, we were thrilled when we heard that the film was a go. We’ve long felt that Ratchet, Clank, Qwark, and their Solana galaxy milieu had all of the action, humor, pathos, and just plain But … [Read more...] about Ratchet & Clank (2016) postmortem
A digital-only game based on licensed content is doomed to die right from the outset. At some point, months or years from now, that licensing agreement will expire - at which point the publisher can no longer sell the game. It will be summarily pulled from digital storefronts - sometimes with little or no warning - and is unlikely to ever resurface, unless the publisher is willing to negotiate those licensing deals all over again. Last December, a slew of Transformers games were suddenly removed from Steam and PSN (and later from the Xbox Marketplace) with no warning from publisher Activision. Among them was Transformers: Devastation by renowned developer PlatinumGames, which had only been released two years previously. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Marvel titles published by Activision have suffered a similar fate. Players who have previously bought and downloaded such games can still download them again. But even this exception may not apply forever. The fact is that you do not … [Read more...] about Where do downloadable games go when they die?
Some of the games below haven't been officially announced, yet circumstantial evidence has pointed to their definite existence in years past. Others have been confirmed, but have little concrete details known about them apart from official logos or trademark renewals. And some have even moved a significant way down the development track, with playable versions demonstrated in previous events. But one thing each of the games below have in common is that we've heard very little about them in recent times. Are these games still coming? Are they stuck in development hell? Will we ever get to play them, or have they gone away completely? Our GameSpot editors have joined together to look back at what we know about The Last Guardian, Blizzard's Titan, Starcraft: Ghost, Rockstar's Agent, Rainbow Six Patriots, Brothers In Arms: Furious 4, Beyond Good and Evil 2, and of course, the ever mysterious Half-Life 3. The Last Guardian -- Peter Brown The Last Guardian is a game that chronicles the … [Read more...] about Missing In Action: The Biggest Games To Have Never Been Released
