Will Stadia work? Right now, I can't tell you. Google's game streaming service, revealed at the Game Developers' Conference this week, has the infrastructure might and engineering genius of the world's biggest tech company behind it. Early tests of the service and of last year's Project Stream prototype are encouraging; Google says it will be able to lower the 25-megabits-per-second connection requirement for Project Stream by the time of Stadia's launch later this year. That brings it within reach of the average UK home broadband connection - in theory. But until it's available at scale in the real world, in real households, with real internet usage patterns, we won't really know. Will Stadia succeed? This, too, is impossible to answer on the information we have. We don't know how it will be priced or indeed what the business model will be. (Subscription, like Netflix? Purchase, like iTunes? Will there be any upfront cost beyond the controller - if you even need that?) Even more … [Read more...] about Stadia offers a thrilling new vision, but are Google and gaming ready for each other?

Tridify Convert has been designed specifically for developers who want to spend more time creating and less time importing. Bridging the gap between BIM and Unity, Tridify’s automation technology helps fast-track and streamline workflows. There are two key elements: 1) an automatically scalable cloud service that enables the conversion of 3D BIM & CAD models to Unity with BIM data attached (in minutes, not hours), and 2) an expanding BIM toolset that allows for advanced search functions and other automated features such as material mapping, colliders, and lighting generation. A Revit model in Unity after being converted via Tridify Convert. This is running on the High Definition Render Pipeline (HDRP) using dynamic lights and shadows. Converting architectural models to virtual models has previously been an uphill struggle and a process prone to errors. Tridify has developed an easy and fast workflow for developers to import BIM models and data to Unity for all kinds of use … [Read more...] about New Asset Store Plugin helping developers to visualize BIM models in Unity – Unity Blog
These days, the world seems to be moving away from owning material goods. In the video game business, this trend isn’t just manifesting in the transition from physical to digital games. The industry appears to be convinced that streaming is the future of game distribution. One company, a French startup named Blade, is putting a bigger bet on that possibility than most others. Blade soft-launched its cloud gaming service, Shadow, in California this past February, following a successful debut in Europe in late 2016. Now, Blade is taking Shadow to the masses in America. But as tough as the platform’s technological hurdles are, Blade realizes it has an even more daunting task: simply getting people on board. Seeing — or, in this case, playing — is believing, as they say. And from a recent demo, it seems like Shadow’s tech may finally be working well enough for people to believe in. How Shadow works The idea behind Shadow is paying for streaming access to a … [Read more...] about Cloud-based gaming PC Shadow may finally be ready for prime time
