To understand the socio-political effect YouTube has on the world in 2018, you first have to ask: What is YouTube? There’s a divide between how a large portion of the general public views YouTube — as an open platform where almost any ideology can live — and how YouTube executives seem to regard their company — as a stage for encouraging social change. That dichotomy led to the alleged “YouTube Purge” this past week, a term coined by predominantly right-wing voices that say YouTube is trying to remove their content from the site and censor free speech. It all came to a head on March 3, when Alex Jones, a conspiracy theorist who owns and hosts on the right-wing network Infowars, said that YouTube was going to delete his personal channel and all of his videos on March 4. “The Alex Jones channel with billions of views is frozen,” he tweeted. “We have been told it will be deleted tomorrow and all 33 thousands (sic) videos will be … [Read more...] about How does YouTube decide to get rid of certain channels?
The issue of whitewashing is one that's plagued TV and film for years, and yet it never seems to stop. Whether it's Tilda Swinton being cast as the Ancient One--typically portrayed as an Asian man in the comics--in Doctor Strange or Jennifer Lawrence playing Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games--despite the books describing the character as having olive skin and black hair, it's something that's all too common. However, Altered Carbon executive producer Laeta Kalogridis is preemptively shutting down any notion of whitewashing on her next project. "Well, let's get the obvious bit out of the way, right away. SAO is an essentially Japanese property, in which Kirito and Asuna, who are the two leads, are Japanese. In the television show, … [Read more...] about Netflix’s Sword Art Online Live-Action TV Show Won’t Whitewash Asian Characters
Four and a half years ago, Microsoft announced a live-action Halo TV series in development at cable network Showtime, backed by Steven Spielberg as an executive producer. Four and a half years later, we've not heard anything else. If it feels like a long time ago - that's because it is. It's before Halo: The Master Chief Collection arrived and had all those issues, before Halo 5, and long before Halo Wars 2. Step up Showtime boss David Nevins, who has this week said the Halo TV project is - in fact - not dead. "[It] is absolutely still in development, still moving forward and I'm encouraged by what we've seen so far," Levine told TV Guide. "It's still live action, and it will definitely satisfy the fans of Halo and I think also satisfy the drama audiences of Showtime." But apart from mentioning he had also seen scripts, that was all Levine could say on the matter. The project was announced back at E3 2013, when Halo boss Bonnie Ross introduced this video of Spielberg talking about … [Read more...] about Spielberg’s Halo TV show “still in very active development”, network claims
