Uh oh, here she goes again. “Does anyone want to tell Alice that The Sims 4 is the worst iteration in the Sims series?” No, you don’t need to tell me, I know it’s not the best. The Sims 3 will forever be dear to my heart, what with its cars and lack of loading screens, but The Sims 4 does its best by having more tools and options. A lot can be said for its overpriced expansions, that are severely lacking in stuff for their price, but we should really be thankful for those ‘Create A Sim’ options and the intricate houses that are now possible. It’s been around for four years now and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down, what with the Get Famous expansion pack only being released this November. I’ll be honest here, I am 100% that Sims … [Read more...] about Have You Played… The Sims 4?

It's no secret many coaster simulator fans long for the old days of theme park management games. Chris Sawyer's original RollerCoaster Tycoon games are considered classics, with multiple revivals and a passionate community. Recently, the 3D style popularized by RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 and NoLimits has made a comeback. Those looking for a revival of the retro style, however, need look no further than Parkitect. As a classic RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 fan, Parkitect looked exciting to me from the moment I saw its Kickstarter. Now, coming up on two years in Early Access, the game has grown from a simple recreation of the isometric rollercoaster sim to an evolution of it. Reviving such a classic genre is no easy task, but with the current, fifth beta release, indie studio Texel Raptor are getting close to opening their little theme park to the public.Parkitect developers Garret Randell and Sebastian Sebioff Mayer told me setting their new theme park sim apart was a goal from the beginning. … [Read more...] about Parkitect is reviving the classic rollercoaster sim
Slightly Mad Studios has revealed that Project Cars 2 will be adding nine new iconic cars and a new race track tomorrow on March 6th, 2018. This new update is meant to celebrate Porsche’s 70th Anniversary. Lead Technical Vehicle Artist Casey Ringley recently announced the Porsche Legends Pack via PlayStation Blog. It is the second expansion pack to be released for Project Cars 2. One of Porsche's most legendary locations will be appearing for the very first time in a racing simulation game. It is the 3.7km FIA-certified ‘Porsche On-road Circuit’ in Leipzig, which was designed by famed F1-track designer Hermann Tilke in real life. It's a testament to the race track's authenticity that even the distinctive diamond-shaped Porsche Customer Centre has been virtually recreated, with the addition of pit-boxes for sim racers. Each of the seven turns has been passionately recreated, mirroring world-famous venues such as the Suzuka S bend and … [Read more...] about Project Cars 2 Getting New Cars and Track Tomorrow to Celebrate Porsche’s 70th Anniversary

Ever since Looking Glass Studios' seminal 3D role-playing game Ultima Underworld (1992), the immersive sim has been held up by its proponents as a game design ideal. Notably, these games tend to espouse an ethos built around the idea that a player should feel like an inhabitant of the game's world — with all of the freedoms that would entail. And while it has tended to come in and out of vogue across the industry since its inception, the immersive sim is definitely enjoying a bit of a renaissance right now — with Prey and Dishonored developer Arkane at the head of growing wave of immersive sim disciples and admirers. With that in mind, we thought it'd be good to check in with some devs from around the industry to highlight some key games in the genre that all developers should study -- whether you're making an immersive sim or not -- in an effort to understand the strengths of this school of game design. Dishonored 1 & 2 - … [Read more...] about 7 influential immersive sims that all devs should play
