Analogue is on a mission to revitalize the way fans play classic games. The Super Nt is the latest step in that battle. “All clone systems fucking suck,” Analogue CEO Christopher Taber exclaims when asked about the rival products to his company’s latest piece of retro gaming hardware. The exasperation in his voice makes clear he isn’t just trash talking the competition: as a video game fan he’s frustrated by these systems, and that’s partially responsible for inspiring him to create a better class of retro revival. Taber is referring to the quick-buck emulation machines that are often found on store shelves as potential stocking fillers at Christmas. Sometimes they’re licensed, sometimes they’re not. Sega in particular loves to license them out, slapping Sonic and Axel from Streets of Rage on the box of a naff, cheap-feeling Mega Drive clone that emulates those classic games poorly. He’s right: they’re rubbish. … [Read more...] about The battle for retro perfection with Analogue’s Super Nt: a SNES for the modern age

EVER played a game for ages, but still not beaten it? We've rounded up the games that take the longest amount of time to fully complete – and the top title requires nearly 700 hours of your time. It's thanks to data from How Long to Beat, a website that tracks how long it takes players to finish games. We've trawled through the website to find the 10 video games that take the longest to fully complete – that means finishing all of the side-quests and getting all the unlockables too. Only games that have "completionist" data from ten or more players have been included. And the longest game turns out to be Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate – which takes an incredible 693 hours to finish, on average. The Monster Hunter franchise actually appears three times in the top 10, highlighting the expansiveness of those games. All Xbox One X Enhanced games - whether they're exclusive or multiplatform, current or backwards compatible, available now or coming soon (like Cyberpunk 2077, pictured above) - are guaranteed to look fantastic. It's all made possible by the world-class hardware in the Xbox One X, which can boost in-game graphics to previously unseen levels only rivaled by high-end PCs. What Enhanced actually means can vary wildly from game to game, but usually you're looking at 4K output and/or HDR capabilities as a bare minimum. You'll often get plenty of performance bonuses to boot, including graphical upgrades like better lighting and shadows, improved textures, increased detail at distance, and more. Some games like The Witcher 3 and Monster Hunter World also give you the choice between maximum resolution or the highest, smoothest framerates (as the two modes are often a 'one or the other' deal). The best upcoming Xbox One games for 2018 and beyondThere are over 100 Xbox One X Enhanced titles, and … [Read more...] about Every Xbox One X Enhanced game
This week, we’re running a big list of what we — and a group of trusted friends — recently voted as the 500 best video games of all time. For the backstory, criteria, explanation of why Breath of the Wild isn’t on the list, etc., head to the beginning here: The 500 best games of all time. For numbers 300-201, scroll down. 300. Microsoft Flight Simulator (1982, PC) Though technically not the first flight simulator, Microsoft Flight Simulator revolutionized the simulation genre with how many real world variables it threw at players. The changing weather, time of day, new coordinate systems and a new engine were seen as so realistic at the time, the game's advertising claimed if it were any more lifelike "you'd need a license." 299. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (2013, Nintendo 3DS) The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is one of the best classic Zelda games in the series. As Polygon's recent fifth birthday approached, we started thinking about what we could do to celebrate it. And what's more fun than ranking the 100 best games of all time? 500? So we did. We started by setting rules upfront. We asked everyone to vote based on innovation, polish and durability, rather than simply personal taste. We cut games released in 2017 to eliminate recency bias. And we left out sequels that we deemed too similar to the games that came before them. Then we voted, but we knew we had gaps in our knowledge on staff. So in addition to gathering votes from the Polygon team, we worked with a group of external and freelance writers to pull in their input: Kahlief Adams, Susan Arendt, Katherine Cross, Jon-Paul Dyson, Benj Edwards, Cara Ellison, JC Fletcher, Jenn Frank, Harold Goldberg, Janine Hawkins, Blake Hester, Laura Hudson, Henry Lowood, Jeremy Parish, Carolyn Petit, Andrea Rene, Jaz Rignall and Gary Whitta. Collecting all those votes together, we then combed through … [Read more...] about The 500 best games of all time: 500-401
