It is better to innovate and fall short than to stagnate and succeed. Every misstep is a small success, a burst of inspiration telling us what can be improved. That’s why it’s so peculiar to see something flop without other innovators coming to pick up the pieces. One such case is Spore, which by most accounts is a mediocre game, but a great tool. Is that a fair assessment though? After all, hindsight is 20/20. Let’s dive into the primordial ooze to see if Spore deserved its ho-hum reception. Hype was certainly a major factor in the original reception. The free creature creator set the bar somewhere in the upper stratosphere. With all the parts at their disposal, players could create anything. Best of all was players could upload clips of their creations directly to YouTube. The result was a wildly successful demo that doubled as an engaging publicity stunt. Unfortunately, the creature creator represents only a small portion of the final product—less than a … [Read more...] about 10 Years of Spore – A Reputation Well-Deserved?
If there’s one piece of gaming hardware we’ve seen a whole lot more of in the last few years, it’s gaming chairs. DXRacer introduced the racing-style gaming chair to the masses more than ten years ago, but their popularity has grown as many high-profile Twitch streamers sit their butts in seats that look straight out of the Fast and the Furious.Bucket-style gaming chairs aren't intrinsically better than traditional office-style desk chairs for PC gaming (check our guide to the best traditional gaming chairs here), but they do feature a distinctive style and set of features that clearly appeal to gamers. We've spent the last year sitting in a variety of new racing-style gaming chairs to determine the most comfortable and high-quality pick. The Vertagear SL5000 still remains our top choice, but the new RESPAWN 200 gives it a serious run for its money. The best racing chair High-quality construction and materials Balanced comfort and support Good overall design Multiple … [Read more...] about The best racing-style gaming chair
Is Lara Croft the most physically-competent character in videogames? At the risk of upsetting fans of literally anyone else, let’s just go ahead and say: yes, yes she is. Ezio might edge it at parkour and swan-diving, Kratos is slightly better at pushing giant rocks, Snake is fractionally more advanced at judo and Drake is vastly superior at looking like he’s going to die whenever he tries climbing anything… but Lara can do all of those things and other stuff. In early games she was a front-somersaulting, shark-murdering polygonal uber-wench, and now she’s added archery, stealth and pickaxe-fighting to the list. Lara is the best, and you should be more like her. More importantly, you should train like her. “Training with functional movements, not just to burn fat or build muscle, has benefits that go way beyond looking good in shorts and a tank top,” says personal trainer Jessica Wolny. “As well as building you a more balanced, less … [Read more...] about Swimming, sprinting and *lots* of pullups: how to get a Lara Croft body
The latest video for the arcade version of Team Ninja's Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate reveals that the game features a new fighter called Marie Rose, a Swedish gothic Lolita. Marie Rose's fighting style is based on a Russian martial art called Systema, a military fighting style with an emphasis on controlling the six body levers through pressure points and striking. The fighter reveal follows Siliconera's report last month that the arcade game will feature a brand new unannounced character not previously featured in console versions of Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate. The arcade version is based off Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate and is slated to hit arcades in Japan this winter. A western release for the arcade edition has not yet been announced. Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate launched across North America, Europe, Australia and Japan for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in Spetember. Polygon has reached out to a Tecmo Koei representative asking if Marie Rose will make it onto the … [Read more...] about Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate Arcade’s newest fighter is a GothLoli Russian-styled martial artist
