"I forget everything between footsteps."'Anna!' I finish shouting, snapping my mouth shut in surprise."My mind has gone blank. I don't know who Anna is or why I'm calling her name. I don't even know how I got here. I'm standing in a forest, shielding my eyes from the spitting rain. My heart's thumping, I reek of sweat and my legs are shaking. I must have been running but I can't remember why."'How did-' I'm cut short by the sight of my own hands. They're bony, ugly. A stranger's hands. I don't recognise them at all."It could be a video game. It could be so many video games - you in an alien body, the moment the action begins. It could be you in the back of the plane in BioShock, you shaken awake in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, you on a slab in DOOM. But it's not. It's a book, and from the moment you open it, you're off at a pace which never lets up, hurtling around an Agatha Christie world filled with characters and rules you desperately want to understand. Who are you? Why … [Read more...] about How a lifelong diet of games influenced The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle

The Logitech Gamepad F310 looks like the product of a plastic mold designed to create garbage. Its beady little buttons will absolutely callous your thumb, and you will definitely flip the XInput/DirectInput switch on the back accidentally and spend 10 minutes trying to figure out why it isn't working. But once you realize your error and re-grip those bulbous analog sticks, the F310 will settle back into your hands and its seams will creak out the comfortable, gentle groans of home. This was my main controller for years, not because I thought the Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers weren't good, but because the one I was using broke, and an F310 was there, at the bottom of a box. It worked so well I put off replacing it. I finally did, but while the Xbox One controller I'm using now is an obvious upgrade, every time its pathetic micro USB connector pops out in the middle of a Rocket League game, I pine for the thick, root-like cable of Logitech's blue hunk of input plastic. It does … [Read more...] about The Logitech F310 may be ugly, but it’s $15 and will always be there for you
The creator of Plants Vs Zombies returns after nine years with Octogeddon – an arcade-inspired game of cephalopodic mayhem. One angry octopus takes on the world in his vengeful quest to destroy all that humans hold dear: large tourist attractions. Here’s wot I think. The Bristol Aquarium recently got itself a new octopus. Luna, a beautiful giant Pacific octopus, arrived last summer, and is worth the ticket price on her own. Unlike the previous inhabitant of the enormous cylindrical tank, she’s bold and daft and seemingly not shy at all. On my most recent visit I was treated to the most extraordinary display of the suckers on her tentacles, as she splayed them across the glass at eye level such that they could be inspected in extraordinary detail. Chatting with one of the aquarium staff who looks after her, I was told that octopuses kept in captivity like this will pick a member of staff they most like, and demonstrate their fondness for this individual through play. … [Read more...] about Wot I Think: Octogeddon
Good and evil is barely the start of it, frankly. Fable is one of those rare, fascinating game series upon which nobody can really seem to agree about anything for very long. It's a shallow RPG, or maybe it's a canny and satirical examination of RPGs in general. It's hilarious - oh, the burping! Or maybe it's just juvenile. Let's face it: Fable's easy to the point of being obsequious, isn't it? Or maybe it's choosing to measure itself in ways that go beyond mere difficulty? It's no surprise, then, that with all this discussion churning around it, the world of Albion is so often defined by a mechanic that it doesn't even contain. As a young child, the story once went, you will find an acorn. If you plant the acorn, green shoots will emerge from the earth. Years later, after a long life of consequence and heroism, you will return to the place that you planted that acorn and a huge oak tree will tower overhead. A lovely idea, isn't it, that a game would be both so reactive and so poetic, … [Read more...] about What’s Fable really all about?
