Walt Disney built his career on the back of adaptations and today, 80 years after the premiere of Snow White, his company’s animated retellings of fairy tales and myths are considered to be the definitive versions for countless generations. Take Hans Christen Andersen’s Little Mermaid, published in 1837, which ends with the mermaid casting herself into the ocean and dissolving into sea foam rather than murdering her beloved prince. Most people know the redheaded, purple seashell-bra-wearing Ariel and her happy ending. Disney’s latest big-budget spectacle, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, is an unusual entry in film-adaptation history. Written by Ashleigh Powell and Tom McCarthy (Spotlight), the fantasy is based on the popular Tchaikovsky ballet, which itself follows the plot of Alexander Dumas’ 1844 “The Story of the Nutcracker.” The Dumas version, however, is a reworking of an 1816 story by E.T.A Hoffman called “The Nutcracker and the Mouse … [Read more...] about What is the oldest story that Disney has ever adapted?

Disney has debuted a first look at Guy Ritchie’s live-action Aladdin movie, which stars Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Jasmine and Will Smith in the role of Aladdin’s flamboyant friend, Genie. But don’t expect a look of the iconic blue being just yet. Aladdin follows the basic premise of the original movie, and the trailer is beholden to those early moments, giving us a glimpse of Agrabah and the Cave of Wonders. We see Massoud as Aladdin, but before we can get any big reveal... it’s over. A true tease. Disney first announced that a live-action version of Aladdin was in the works in October 2016. The film’s production wasn’t without its issues. Production on the film was pushed back several months in 2017, as the search for the right actors to play the lead roles of Aladdin and Princess Jasmine took longer than expected. Disney then faced an onslaught of criticism after reports came out in early 2018 that the company was using brown face … [Read more...] about First live-action Aladdin teaser brings the Disney movie to life
DISNEY's 2019 deadline for removing its movies from Netflix is fast approaching, so you better start binge-watching Marvel and Star Wars films before they're all gone. Not to mention Pixar and Disney's own blockbuster animations. Now a new report claims that Ant-Man and the Wasp – the sequel to the 2015 superhero hit – will be the last Marvel movie to land on Netflix, after it does the rounds at cinemas, as Disney takes back its film properties for its upcoming streaming service – details on which are scarce. What we do know is that "Disneyflix", as some insiders have dubbed it, will include the media giant's Lucasfilm (Star Wars, Indiana Jones), Marvel, Pixar, and Disney movies, along with original shows and productions based on its uber-successful franchises. It will also be stocked with shows from Disney's TV channels and the ABC network (home to Modern Family, The Bachelor, and Grey's Anatomy). The Netflix-style Disney originals will include a live-action … [Read more...] about Disney gutting Netflix – New Ant-Man movie will be last Marvel film to stream on Netflix as Disney purge looms
Movies Anywhere, the video platform that brings together a variety of services offering streaming and digital copies of Hollywood films, will soon have a new partner: Microsoft. Microsoft Movies & TV, the Windows- and Xbox-based digital video service formerly known as Xbox Video, is joining Movies Anywhere this week. That’s according to a page that went live on Microsoft’s website this morning, as reported by The Verge. It appears that someone jumped the gun on the announcement — Microsoft has since taken down the page, and it now redirects to an error message. But the welcome page on the Movies Anywhere website already features the Microsoft Movies & TV logo, suggesting that it is now one of the supported digital storefronts on the platform. However, it’s not currently possible to link a Microsoft account on the Movies Anywhere site. Presumably, this feature will go live once Microsoft makes its official announcement. Asked for confirmation by Polygon, … [Read more...] about Microsoft’s Xbox movie app joining Disney’s Movies Anywhere platform
