I’m a big fan of Hades. You’d think an early access roguelike wouldn’t be a great fit for the Bastion devs, but I should never have doubted Supergiant’s ability to knit a story around whatever genre or development structure they please. Last night saw the release of the Chaos Update, and there’s something else lurking among the balance tweaks, art changes and new room types. That something is Primordial Chaos, and she’s got a deal for you. I’ve encountered her once, so far, though unfortunately her powers seem to extend to messing up my screen-capture software. She offers three deals that give you a handicap for the next three rooms, but then a permanent bonus if you survive – stuff like more damage, health or money. It’s an interesting decision delivered through a novel character, adding an unexpected layer to an already intriguing world. You can take the Supergiant out of traditional story structures, but you can’t take the … [Read more...] about Say hello to Primordial Chaos in the first big Hades update

It’s been a wild year for VG247, so to celebrate we’re going to be republishing some of our favourite work published in 2018 – opinion pieces, features, and interviews, that we’ve enjoyed writing and reading, and which we believe showcase some of our best work. Enjoy! How God of War hides its big story reveals in plain sight was first published on May 11, 2018. Did you notice how many of God of War’s big reveals were hiding in plain sight? God of War is a game of many triumphs. It has satisfying combat, and a world big enough to encourage exploration that somehow never overstays its welcome. It’s also a game fond of hiding something worthwhile around every corner, pushing you to scour every cranny if it means spending more time in its gorgeous world. Underlining it all is a coherent story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. God of War’s story is relatively straightforward, even if the game spends time teasing much bigger stakes that … [Read more...] about Best of 2018: How God of War hides its big story reveals in plain sight
SAMSUNG'S foldable smartphone is finally expected to launch today – and leaked designs suggest it's enormous. The gadget folds out into a full-size tablet, and raises the obvious question: are smartphones simply too big now? The device, known through leaks and rumours as either the Galaxy X or Galaxy F, has been an ongoing project at Samsung for years. Last month, Samsung posted a tweet that teased a possible reveal at its annual Developer Conference on November 7. And today Reuters reports that Samsung will go ahead with a partial reveal of the phone's design and features at the event. "Samsung Electronics Co will depart from its usual policy of keeping product plans highly secret and provide some details of the phone’s key features for app developers this week," the report read. A Samsung official is quoted as saying: "Unlike our flagship products, the foldable phone is a completely new concept in terms of design and user experience, which requires a different approach. … [Read more...] about Samsung Galaxy X foldable phone could launch today – but is it TOO big?
There’s just one week to go until Nvidia’s big Gamescom surprise, but will it be the arrival of their new Nvidia Turing graphics cards or something else entirely – something, perhaps, like a bolt from the blue shock announcement about their upcoming Big Format Gaming Displays? We won’t know for sure until next Monday, but just in case Nvidia do pull a fast one on us, here’s a quick refresher on everything we know about Nvidia’s BFGDs so far, including who’s making them, what their specs are, and how they might finally make PC gaming in the living room a reality. Nvidia BFGD: What are they and who’s making them? First announced back in January 2018, Nvidia’s Big Format Gaming Displays (or BFGDs for short) are essentially the PC gaming equivalent of a living room TV – and they look as though they could be some of the best gaming monitors of all time. I’ll get into why that is in a second, but before we do get into the … [Read more...] about Nvidia’s BFGD: Everything we know so far about their Big Format Gaming Displays
Not too long ago, a fan of Epic Games and People Can Fly’s multiplayer sandbox survival title Fortnite designed a fine-looking Black Panther skin influenced by the suit that T’Challa wears in the successful Marvel superhero movie. Not to be outdone themselves, a couple of twin graphic designers known as The Sneaky Bros have taken inspiration from popular films to create mock-ups of potential skins modeled after characters from V for Vendetta and The Big Lebowski. As seen below in The Sneaky Bros’ concept art for their crossover skins, both V from V for Vendetta and The Dude from The Big Lebowski get the Fortnite Battle Royale treatment, with the former being dubbed “Masked Martyr” and the latter called “Duder Looter.” What’s more is that both of the designs for the characters’ pickaxes draw from themes and props found within the films, with V having a rose affixed atop a knife, while The Dude’s is built around one of his … [Read more...] about Fortnite Battle Royale Fans Design V for Vendetta, Big Lebowski Skins
