Base-building is de rigueur these days, what with all those survival games, Minecraft, Fallout 4 and now Fortnite, but before all that we had tiny top-down or isometric worlds in which we diligently built cities and dungeons and theme parks and rail networks. The central appeal of management games was and is that they give us an idealised sense of what it is like to create a game – to weave new worlds upon our screens, guided only by our imaginations, ingenuity and the limitations of the in-game taxation system. Town sims and theme sims are now healthier and more vibrant than they’ve ever been, expanding. This round-up … [Read more...] about The 20 best management games on PC
What are the best FPS games? It’s a hotly debated topic, and one that, once the debate initiated, made the VG247 office erupt in an impromptu nerf war. Luckily, when the dust settled, we managed to land on our top 50. Just so you can have a bit on insight into our process, here’s how we narrowed them down. First off, we favoured new stuff over older games. While you will find a few retro shooters in this list, we prioritised newer releases simply because they hold up better today. GoldenEye might be a classic – and it still made our list – but it controls like a shopping trolley with a broken wheel. That’s why you’ll also find this list stuffed with the odd immersive sim. Sorry. Other than that, we just had the near-impossible task of ranking them all, and no doubt you’ll disagree … [Read more...] about The 50 best FPS games ever
Today, we’re going to talk about which platform should you make games for. We’re going to talk about specific platforms. We’re going to go into some simple concepts about each one. Which one you should choose. This comes as a request from one of our fellow recruits in Game Dev Underground and he wanted me to talk about how to choose which platform to develop for. I think there are 3 primary things to consider. At least these are the questions that I asked myself. I’m sure there’s plenty of data and all kinds of other stuff you want to be super analytical on which platform is actually the best. I make HTML 5 games, that’s my favorite technology. That means that by nature I can make games for any platform I want. So which platform to choose is actually a pretty relevant question for me. My process is like this. First, I look at the type of game that I want to make. Not all games work well on all platforms. For example, shooters work really well on PC, … [Read more...] about Which Platform Should I Make Games For?
