Outriders dev explains all those pesky loading cutscenes

· March 2, 2021 ·

If you've been playing the Outriders demo since it came out last week, you may have picked up on an annoyance: loading cutscenes. The third-person looter shooter game from People Can Fly (Bulletstorm, Gears of War: Judgment) plays a short cutscene whenever you want to move to a new area. These cutscenes show everything from a character opening a door to climbing a ledge. They include a full fade to black opening before playing the cutscene, then another fade to black before you get back into the action. These cutscenes sometimes border on the hilarious. One I noticed while playing saw my character perform a dramatic jump across a broken bridge: Not sure I need a cutscene for that jump, Outriders pic.twitter.com/djZ25EyHhO — Wesley Yin-Poole (@wyp100) February 28, 2021 This content is hosted on an external platform, which will only display it if you accept targeting cookies. The Little Mermaid adds to its cast, and makes a huge change to Ursula

· March 2, 2021 ·

Disney's live-action remake of The Little Mermaid has added to its cast and made a major change to its villain Ursula. According to Deadline , Jessica Alexander has been cast in an unknown role in the movie. Alexander is probably best known for her part as Olivia in the Netflix/BBC series Get Even. She's also appearing in Kelsey Egan's sci-fi movie Glasshouse, and Ruth Paxton's horror film A Banquet. As for Ursula, who will be played by Melissa McCarthy in the remake, a significant change has been made to her backstory (H/T Comic Book ). The Deadline report describes her as Ariel's "evil aunt Ursula". In the animated original, the villain was simply a scheming sea witch with no familial relation to the titular mermaid. Ursula planned on taking the underwater throne for herself, though, and used Ariel's wish to walk on the surface to further her plans. Though for the animated classic Ursula was at one point set to be King Triton's sister, making her Ariel's aunt, the idea … [Read more...] about The Little Mermaid adds to its cast, and makes a huge change to Ursula

Outriders developers explain why a tiny cutscene plays every time you open a door

· March 2, 2021 ·

If you've been playing the Outriders demo, you've likely noticed that there are a lot of little cutscenes that play whenever you transition from one area to another. Opening a door? Cutscene. Climbing up a ledge? Cutscene. Jumping over a chasm? Cutscene. And it's not just a quick flash, either: It's a full process of fading to black, playing a brief video clip, then fading back to the game. The videos don't even preserve the custom headgear you're wearing. It's jarring. Eurogamer editor Wesley Yin-Poole shared the experience on Twitter: Not sure I need a cutscene for that jump, Outriders pic.twitter.com/djZ25EyHhO February 28, 2021 See more Clips like this are often used to camouflage level loading (never forget that Mass Effect elevator ), and to an extent that's the case here as well. But creative director Bartek Kmita explained to Eurogamer that the system is also used to bring co-op players together when they're moving from one area to another. … [Read more...] about Outriders developers explain why a tiny cutscene plays every time you open a door
