Battlefield 5 is taking the series back to its World War II roots. The announcement was made during a lavish press conference live from London, one that was hosted by comedian Trevor Noah. But, even before the public was made aware, developer DICE and publisher Electronic Arts spent hours delivering detailed information to the press in a behind-closed-doors information session. According to senior producer Andreas Morell, Battlefield 5 intends to show, “the Second World War like you’ve never experienced before [highlighting] unseen locations, untold stories and unplayed gameplay moments.” The title is expected to release across multiple platforms by October, and there are plans to fuel the community with free content updates long after its launch. Here’s everything we know. What is Battlefield 5? The latest entry in an iconic series that dates back to 2002, Battlefield 5 is a celebration of the chaos and the drama of combined arms warfare. Developer EA DICE unveiled Battlefield 5 today during a lavish livestreamed event. Earlier this week, Polygon was invited to a private, in-depth presentation on how the game will improve on the series’ classic formula. As characters accumulate experience, they will be able to unlock different subclasses, referred to as Archetypes. That will allow players to specialize down a certain path, such as an anti-tank role for a particular class, although DICE’s presentation was … [Read more...] about Six ways Battlefield 5 will change the series’ traditional gameplay
The comparisons with Fortnite: Battle Royale are inevitable. But don’t let that dishearten you, or detract from the fact that Battlefield 5 is very much its own, unique game… and quite possibly the most ambitious evolution of the franchise in years. This is DICE making a WW2 shooter quite unlike we’ve ever seen, and it’s possibly going to make last year’s Call of Duty: WW2 look a bit silly.Senior Producer, and Battlefield stalwart, Lars Gustavsson makes a standard boast at the start of my extensive, behind the scenes look at Battlefield 5. “This is the richest, deepest and most immersive BF ever created,” he says. It’s a line we’ve all heard before, but this time it seems true. The scale and ambition of this game is vast, so to simply compare it to Fortnite, PUBG, Destiny 2 or any big shooter of this generation is perhaps an understatement. If DICE's grand ambitions fall into place, this could be the shooter of this generation. So, … [Read more...] about Battlefield 5 learns from Fortnite and Destiny, aiming to be the only shooter you’ll need this year

Last week, Xbox Live announced its schedule of Games With Gold for December, bringing to 48 the number of free games it offered in 2016. Were they any good? What would they cost otherwise? In short, what do the numbers say about the value of this Xbox Live Gold benefit? We’ll try to answer that question this year as we have the past three years. To that, however, we’ve added a few more questions: How old is the game? Did Microsoft publish it? What publisher did Games With Gold use the most? Did these appear earlier on PlayStation Plus? These questions may shed light on where these free games programs are headed, particularly as the previous console generation ages and the Xbox One’s backward compatibility program continues to pile up old titles.
