The Intel Optane 905P is the Titan of SSDs: incredibly fast, enormously expensive and basically the best SSD on the market, and a piece of PC hardware we just had to test out. It's our contention that a good SSD is essential at this point for your gaming PC - just in terms of the extra user-friendliness you get from Windows, plus the reduced loading times in games - but just how much do you need to invest to get a decent experience? How do mid-range and more value-orientated SSDs compare to the absolute state of the art? And where does this leave the traditional mechanical hard drive? Technology has continued to evolve there so in assessing solid-state performance for gaming, we decided to include a fast modern drive too. To get a good overall view of the market and the kind of capabilities that solid state storage delivers across a range of price-points, we used five drives for our tests overall. The Optane 905P is staggeringly expensive at around $600 or £550 and its performance … [Read more...] about Are SSDs are essential for today’s gaming PCs?

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds PC test servers received a big new patch earlier today. PUBG’s patch 22, which released this morning, has added a couple of requested features to the PC game. The highlight is the new rank system, which borrows elements from PUBG Mobile. The new system consists of eight ranks, which players can climb up or down based on their accumulated points each season. Similar to many other games with ranked modes, PUBG’s system requires the player to finish ten matches, which then gets them rated and slotted into one of the eight ranks. There’s a clear icon for each rank, and the statistics page have been updated to reflect that, as well as look nicer and more informative. It’s worth noting that ranked doesn’t have separate matchmaking, your performance will simply be tracked in regular matches. Map selection, a feature which was once available but got removed with the arrival of Sanhok, has once again returned. You simply need to … [Read more...] about PUBG PC test patch 22 adds rank system, brings back map select, more
Today you might hear pals buzzing about playing a new demo for Valkyria Chronicles 4, the next game in the Sega turn-based tactical RPG series that’s kinda set in a fantasy-tinged World War II. You might fancy having a crack yourself, considering the first one was grand when it finally came to PC in 2014. You might be bummed to hear that nah, the demo isn’t on PC and it sounds like it may not ever be. A Sega representative told me today, “at this time, no demo is planned for Steam.” Booo. The demo launched today for PlayStation 4, Xbone, and Switch. And not PC. I’ve asked Sega for more details on why not, and will let you know what I hear back. I’d guess that they’re still doing important work on the PC version, given that not having platform certification means optimisation and bugsquishing can be done later in development, but that’s only a guess. Here’s what Sega say about the demo in today’s launch announcement: … [Read more...] about Valkyria Chronicles 4 demo not planned for PC
Retro platformer Shovel Knight, originally released in June 2014, recently passed two million copies sold. Developer Yacht Club Games dropped the number in a blog post, which also offers a detailed breakdown of where those sales came from. Before that, some more good news: in celebration of this milestone, Shovel Knight is 20 percent off on Steam, GOG and Humble for the next week. Shovel Knight originally released on PC, Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, so it's no surprise it's sold the most units on PC (24.4 percent of sales) and 3DS (23.9 percent of sales). More surprising is the Nintendo Switch's spot at third place (17.6 percent of sales) given its newness—Shovel Knight only came to Switch in March 2017. The Switch's launch month also surpassed PC's launch month by 40,000 copies. But outside of the Switch's sales spike, PC acts as the best acid test for Shovel Knight's sales. Roughly 170,000 copies sold on PC in 2014, 140,000 in 2015, 100,000 in 2016, and 75,000 in … [Read more...] about Shovel Knight has sold 2 million copies, most sales on PC but most revenue on Switch
