The first reveal - of sorts - for PlayStation 5 has been and gone, with Sony confirming specs including an octo-core Zen 2 CPU, custom Navi graphics, hardware-accelerated 3D audio, solid state storage and PS4 backwards compatibility. Specifics such as CPU/GPU frequencies and memory allocation remain unknown, but some unlikely - if not downright unbelievable - detective work may have helped to fill in the blanks. This is a story I've been following with interest for three months now with varying degrees of scepticism, but the evidence is starting to look compelling. Bizarrely, it seems that a next-generation gaming processor is being tested on PC benchmarking tool 3DMark - and there's a reasonable possibility that it's PlayStation 5 silicon. We've seen some unbelievable stories play out in the past, be it the PlayStation 3 Slim making a baffling debut in a Phillipines marketplace, two months ahead of launch. Then there was our first look at the PS4 Slim, materialising in Manchester UK, … [Read more...] about In Theory: is PS5 powered by an AMD Gonzalo processor?

A product code for the new AMD custom silicon bound for Sony’s PlayStation 5 has been leaked online. The 2G16002CE8JA2_32/10/10_13E9 code itself might look like someone has passed out face down on their keyboard, but it’s far from gibberish. There’s actually a surprising amount of information that can be gleaned from the jumbled mess of characters. The key specs that have come out of the decoding of the alphanumeric string show a CPU component with eight physical cores, a 3.2GHz boost clock for the chip, and a PCI-ID that shows a Navi 10Lite GPU. That seems to be a shorthand term for the GPU by all accounts, with the real codename for the custom graphics silicon noted as Ariel. There is seemingly also confirmation that the SoC will use AMD’s Zen architecture, but not specifically which generation of the processor design Sony will end up with. Right now it could be either Zen+ or Zen 2. The speculation, however, is the numeral relating to the cache of the … [Read more...] about Next-gen 3.2GHz AMD Zen/Navi chip for PlayStation 5 outed online
AMD Ryzen caused quite splash in the CPU market and since have been giving Intel tough time. This continued with 2nd-gen AMD Ryzen CPUs and Ryzen CPUs have again dominated the month of November and has sold more than double the amount of Intel CPUs. According to stats revealed by German eTailer Mindfactory, AMD Ryzen dominated the CPU market for the month of November with Ryzen 5 2600 leading. You can see the stats in the images below. Not only that, you can clearly see that AMD sold over double the number of CPUs compared to Intel. Furthermore, of all the AMD CPUs sold, AMD’s Pinnacle Ridge-based CPUs amount for 68%. AMD Summit Ridge CPUs amount for 17%, Raven Ridge 13%, and Threadripper accounted for just 2% of all of the AMD CPUs sold in November. As for Intel, Cofee Lake CPUs amounted for 71% of the CPUs sold. Intel Coffee Lake refresh amounted for 21%, Kaby Lake 7% and Slylake-X accounted for just 2%. Intel Core i7-8700K is the top-selling Intel CPU for November … [Read more...] about AMD Ryzen Outsold Intel By 2:1, Ryzen 5 2600 Leads The Charge
AMD processors combining x86 CPUs and Radeon GPU technology have defined the current era of console gaming, but what if these small form factor boxes were wide-open devices, capable of running Windows 10 and PC games? And what if the under-powered Jaguar CPU cores were replaced with Ryzen instead for improved processing power? Last month, Chinese manufacturer Zhongshan Subor unveiled its Z Plus machine, which ticks all of those boxes - and I've spent the last week experimenting with an early production unit. To date, all we've seen of the Z Plus is a render of the casing, some opportunistic motherboard shots and some 'guerrilla' photos of the machine on display at last month's ChinaJoy gaming event in China. First impressions of the actual unit in hand are very pleasant indeed - the packaging is slightly larger than a PS4 Slim retail box, and much smaller than the Pro. Breaking the three seals and opening up the package reveals hardware that is very console-like in nature: stacked … [Read more...] about Hands-on with the Subor Z-Plus: AMD tech tested in new Chinese console
Microsoft has already started talking about the consoles that are coming after the Xbox One family. Although the Xbox One X hasn't even been out a year, Microsoft is already thinking - and designing - the future of Xbox gaming, and according to the reports and rumours, the future is called Xbox Project Scarlett. Of course, although Microsoft is starting to drop tiny teasers for what the next Xbox console will be, we're not going to get any official information any time soon. We predict that we'll get another official sliver at E3 2019 next June, but don't expect anything before then. After all, the Xbox Project Scarlett is expected to drop sometime in 2020, so we're in for a bit of a wait. Until there, here's everything we know so far about Xbox Project Scarlett. What is Xbox Project Scarlett?Xbox Project Scarlett is the purported codename for Microsoft's next console. Like with Project Scorpio, this won't be the final name for Xbox's next console, but just what we're calling … [Read more...] about Xbox Project Scarlett release date, specs, price and everything we know so far
