A rating for Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition has appeared on America’s Entertainment Software Rating Board’s website. The ESRB’s rating of the classic real-time strategy game could mean that an official announcement is imminent. The description of the game offers little in the way of surprises. It says that “players control empires from the Dark Age through the Imperial Age,” and lists several standard RTS tropes like building structures, gathering resources, and commanding military units (making an oddly specific reference to Persia’s War Elephants). Details about the Definitive Edition are pretty scarce. While I imagine it’s pretty likely that the new version will include the game’s original expansion, The Conquerors, it’s not clear whether the three add-ons attached to the 2013’s HD remaster – The Forgotten, The African Kingdoms, and Rise of the Rajas – will be included in the Definitive Edition. That’s a good start. There’s also political wrangling, an unstoppable evil and, um, dragons. The most Gamey Thrones element of all, however, is the ability to lean over a mighty battle map with a council of trusted advisors and decide on your next move. A couple of years after the launch of Age of Empires: Definitive Edition, it seems like the sequel will also be getting an upgrade. The ESRB has released a ratings page for Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition, strongly indicating that we’ll be hearing something about the game very soon. For those of you not in the know, Age of Empires 2 greatly expanded upon the feature set of the first game with a bigger campaign, more factions, and new mechanics. It was well-liked by the real-time strategy community and became something of a mainstay of the genre, right up there with Starcraft, Warcraft, and Command & Conquer. Age of Empires 2 also spawned some of the most memorable cheat codes in gaming history—after all, it’s not every day that you see a bunch of sports cars mow down a cadre of War Elephants. Here is the ESRB description for Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition straight off the rating board’s website: Age of … [Read more...] about Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition rated by ESRB
The end of the bizarre and troubling year 2018 is close, and with it comes a time of reflection. I hope you’re enjoying the RPS Advent Calendar, but even that cannot hope to contain the bounty this year provided. When I joined Unknown Pleasures a year ago, I was a little fatigued with games. There were both too many to see and none that were grabbing me. This isn’t the critic speaking – I’d not written an article for over a year – but the player. 2016-17 were by no means bad years for the PC, but despite all the industry drama (not to mention wider sociopolitical troubles) I think this is the best year we’ve had for PC games for absolutely ages. The games are out there. The weird, the funny, the clever, the silly, the exciting, the touching, the unambitious-but-plain-good games are positively sloshing about the place. But which ones were the best? So here it is: the pick of picks. A selection of the very best, weirdest, most original, and plain fun … [Read more...] about The best of Unknown Pleasures 2018

Sure, I can embroil myself in drama and intrigue just as well as the next aristocrat, but when it comes to ambition—to expanding my kingdom and crushing my enemies—it almost always goes wrong. To counter this failing, I’ve devised a new strategy: don’t play Crusader Kings II. At least, don’t play it directly. Instead, I’m going to pick a character and use the ‘observe’ console command to hand them over to the AI. Then, as the computer does all the heavy lifting, I’ll offer support in the form of other … [Read more...] about Crusader Kings 2 diary: How far can one AI go using wits, skill, and lots of cheats?
