This Skyrim Mod Adds a Mordor-Inspired Nemesis System To The Game
A new PC mod for Skyrim has added a take on the Nemesis system, giving players the chance to create an adversary from almost any hostile creature in the game. While the mod doesn't work with key characters, it can turn run-of-the-mill mudcrabs, Draugr, and dragons into high-level opponents who'll steal your gear and gain buffs in the process. Created by Syclonix and directly inspired by Shadow of Mordor's iconic system--as well as roguelikes and other modern RPG ideas--the mod works by leveling up any enemy that kills you, giving them an extra perk, and applying a debuff to you. They'll also run off with your weapon, and the only way to get the debuff removed and your equipment back is to hunt down your new best frenemy. The mod does create a quest for you to track, so you won't have to worry about not being able to find the mudcrab that inflicted a curse on you and made off with your favorite sword. They can run, but they cannot hide. You can have up to five antagonists active … [Read more...] about This Skyrim Mod Adds a Mordor-Inspired Nemesis System To The Game

This Skyrim bard magic mod lets you use your Spice Girls collection to smite enemies
Audio player loading… If you ask me, videogames peaked as a medium when Hideo Kojima let us arrive on the battlefield to the tune of the Spice Girls (opens in new tab) . Ever since then, I've been on the hunt for the raw, animal high that occurs when a game lets me dispense swift justice and sick beats simultaneously. Bard Magic Overhaul for Skyrim Special Edition (opens in new tab) from Monitor144 might be exactly what I'm looking for. It works like this: in place of Skyrim's traditional spellcasting system, which saw you cast spells by waving your hands around like some kind of uncouth hedge witch, this mod makes it so that all your spells are cast by playing one of Skyrim's many lutes. Chucking a fireball, summoning a daedra, it's all accompanied by either a quick strum or a full song on the lute. The best part, though, is that you can upload your own custom music. Spice World, here I come. All you need to start casting spells from the school of rock is a … [Read more...] about This Skyrim bard magic mod lets you use your Spice Girls collection to smite enemies
Nightdive sheds light on why Blade Runner Enhanced Edition was such a disaster
Audio player loading… I was heartbroken by the state that Nightdive's Blade Runner Enhanced Edition released in (opens in new tab) . As someone with long, fond memories of sitting at my dad's enormous grey Fujitsu PC and running around the original's rain-slick LA streets, I was excited for the surefire nostalgia hit that I thought Nightdive's remaster would be. Well, the rest is history. The smudgy upscaling, unnatural framerate, and a litany of new bugs combined to make sure the remaster turned out a worse experience than the original. Those of us who were looking forward to stepping into Ray McCoy's gumshoes were sorely disappointed. But at least now we know why. A new interview from PCGamesN (opens in new tab) with Nightdive's Larry Kuperman and Dimitris Giannakis—the company's director of business development and lead producer on Blade Runner Enhanced Edition, respectively—sheds some light on the "perfect storm" the project faced before it was released. … [Read more...] about Nightdive sheds light on why Blade Runner Enhanced Edition was such a disaster
Is $300M for Tomb Raider and Deus Ex really that big of a steal?
When I heard that Square Enix had sold Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, and three respected game studios to Embracer Group for $300 million, I instantly became that guy who knows exactly how much everything is worth but can only back up his valuations with rhetorical questions. $300 million? For Tomb Raider? And Deus Ex? Are they serious? It seems like a steal for Embracer, but in retrospect, just because my dad knows who Lara Croft is doesn't necessarily mean that the series is going to be profitable in the future. Sexy British artifact thieves are unfashionable—people want to play as miserable wretches named The Tarnished these days—and the kind of games Eidos-Montréal and Crystal Dynamics are best at making are very expensive to produce. Eidos-Montréal studio head David Anfossi said in 2018 (opens in new tab) that Shadow of the Tomb Raider cost as much as $100 million to make, and another $35 million to promote. It was half-off during Steam's Autumn Sale the same year it … [Read more...] about Is $300M for Tomb Raider and Deus Ex really that big of a steal?
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 now the highest-grossing videogame movie ever in the US
Audio player loading… Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is now the highest-grossing domestic videogame movie ever made—making $147 million in the US to just tip the $146 million of the original. The domestic qualifier is necessary because, while the blue blur's sequel has made $287.8 million globally ( thanks, Deadline (opens in new tab) ), that's still some way off World of Warcraft's $439 million haul. The film sees Sonic and Tails looking for the Master Emerald, with Idris Elba's Knuckles and Jim Carrey's Dr Robotnik in hot pursuit. Interestingly enough the film's release coincided with Carrey announcing his intention to retire from acting—Sonic 3 was confirmed by distributor Paramount in February, so with these kinds of numbers Carrey's resolve shall doubtless be tested with an extremely large cheque. Ben Schwartz, Sonic's voice actor in the movies, tweeted to celebrate the numbers exceeding the first movie: #SonicMovie2 has officially passed the domestic box office … [Read more...] about Sonic the Hedgehog 2 now the highest-grossing videogame movie ever in the US
The Stanley Parable developers highlight its new ultra deluxe accessibility options
Audio player loading… The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe has finally launched, remaking the meta-filled office adventure with a modern facelift and important new features like an in-world dialogue skipping button and a bucket of uncertain emotional value. Developers Crows Crows Crows did add some less satirical updates too though, like an exhaustive list of new accessibility features that it broke down on Twitter. "It’s important to us that The Stanley Parable can be enjoyed by as many people as possible," the Crows Crows Crows developers said . "That's why we introduced many new accessibility settings and quality-of-life features to the Ultra Deluxe edition." There’s a moment in the game where you’re choosing between a red and a blue door. Certain vision impairments make it difficult to distinguish these colors, so we added a toggle that adds unmistakable text to the doors. pic.twitter.com/SJQmG2cYhp May 4, 2022 See more Some of the accessibility options … [Read more...] about The Stanley Parable developers highlight its new ultra deluxe accessibility options
Battalion 1944 studio splits with Square Enix, announces free Legacy edition coming to Steam
Audio player loading… Battalion 1944 (opens in new tab) launched into early access in 2018 as a throwback to the early days of the Call of Duty games. There were some troubles, predictable for an early access game, but it seemed like a very strong start (opens in new tab) for a niche multiplayer FPS. Square Enix, which had published Battalion 1944 under its indie-focused Square Enix Collective, apparently thought so too: It acquired a 20% stake (opens in new tab) in developer Bulkhead in November 2018. Unfortunately, neither the game nor the relationship between Bulkhead and Square Enix worked out quite as hoped. Battalion 1944's average concurrent player count has been stuck in single-digits since mid-2020, a console release that was promised in a 2016 Kickstarter never happened, and today Bulkhead announced that it has "formally ended" its relationship with Square Enix. An announcement about @PlayBattalion pic.twitter.com/pvFQJx8ibz August 9, 2022 See … [Read more...] about Battalion 1944 studio splits with Square Enix, announces free Legacy edition coming to Steam
