6 months is how many weeks
Welcome to year 1, AF (anno Fortnite). Epic’s battle royale is the gaming world’s newest pacesetter, and it's getting bigger every week. But just how many people are playing Fortnite, across PC, consoles, and mobile? Putting a number to the madness is tough. Epic alone is privy to the census of its kingdom, and what it deigns to share isn’t broken down by console or mode (power salute, Save the World). Fortnite’s PC version is only on Epic’s dedicated launcher, which doesn't give us the player data we'd find on Steam. Still, the best guesstimates are backed by some truly astounding stats that hint at Fortnite’s gargantuan reach. For one, it’s a bank-buster. Fortnite took in a hefty $126 million in February alone, another one-up over PUBG’s $103 million according to a report from analytics firm SuperData Research. In March, another SuperData note increased that purse to a staggering $223 million. That financial force is largely thanks … [Read more...] about How many people are playing Fortnite?
Every sports league is always trying to draw in younger fans, but Major League Soccer might be banking on them more than any other. In the American and Canadian sports worlds, soccer is still on the outside looking in — people tend to think of the “big four” pro sports leagues (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL) before MLS. But soccer is becoming increasingly popular here, especially with young people. It turns out that there’s a ton of crossover between MLS fans and people who play video games, which the league is now capitalizing on by creating its own esports organization. Known as eMLS, the esports league grew out of MLS’ existing partnership with Electronic Arts for the publisher’s massively popular FIFA series of soccer video games. It’s a sign of how important gaming is to MLS — which is to say, if it matters to the league’s fans, then it matters to the league. “It’s really based on the connection with the fan base,” said … [Read more...] about How MLS is using FIFA 18 esports to reach the next generation of soccer fans
I've written at some length about how Destiny 2 strayed from the light in terms of its design choices, and more recently we've covered Bungie's planned improvements for the troubled looter shooter. Those were further detailed last week in the form of a roadmap showing when specific changes are due, which was expanded on a day later by the sandbox design lead who talked about how the team is testing an update designed to make guardians "go fast". It sounds welcome but, as someone still playing the game, I can't help but think what's really needed is for Bungie to implement some risky changes right now. Last week's introduction of Masterwork Armor was a classic example of an addition that's both welcome and too conservative. I've already crafted a couple of sets, and while being able to reroll stats is handy, it's not going to draw back lapsed players. More problematically, the signature damage reduction perk is barely noticeable compared to the much sexier orb generation granted … [Read more...] about 6 things Bungie could do for Destiny 2 to bring players back right now
