Xbox Live’s Games With Gold for May 2018 are Super Mega Baseball 2, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, Vanquish and all the Streets of Rage series from the Sega Vintage Collection. That’s according to this unlisted (but official) video, spied today by Wario64 and earlier in the week by others. We’re looking forward to Super Mega Baseball 2, as its predecessor was our Sports Video Game of the Year for 2014. The followup just got a release date — May 1 — (it’s also coming to PlayStation 4 and Windows PC, and it’s $29.99 for them and those who don’t have Xbox Live Gold). So if you have a Gold subscription, you get a brand-new video game with a solid pedigree. Metalhead’s followup will deliver online multiplayer, whose absence in the first Super Mega Baseball was that game’s only real shortcoming. The sequel also offers retooled player models, which are still stylized but not as cartoony as the original’s. The Ego … [Read more...] about Xbox Games With Gold for May 2018: Metal Gear Solid 5, Super Mega Baseball 2

Earnings report roundup: Game industry winners and losers in Q4 2017
Welcome to the quarterly summary of game company financials for the fourth quarter of 2017, which ended in December of last year. Given the scale of financial information generated every three months by dozens of game companies, we’ve come up with a simpler way of presentation. Now expanded to include two key South Korean games companies, alongside the previously ranked western and Japanese games companies, the graphic for each region ranks each company in terms of its market capitalization. You then read along a row to see if a company beat (or not) its previous revenue and profit figures on a year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter basis. Note, if a company is/was loss-making in a quarter, we can’t calculate the percent, hence the “N/A”. US figures are GAAP. The New York Yankees weren’t the first sports team to don pinstripes, but the distinctive pattern is as closely associated with the baseball club as it is with boardroom suits. Basic though it is, the pinstriped design presents some challenges for the makers of baseball video games. In the kind of discussion that happens all the time at studios working on sports titles, the developers of R.B.I. Baseball at Major League Baseball Advanced Media were debating last fall how best to bring the Yankees’ uniform to life in the game. Areas where the pinstripes met a seam didn’t look quite right, so the team fetched some nearby reference material. “We walked down the hall to Billy, who does all of our merchandise stuff — he manages the shop, he gets all the jerseys through,” recalls Peter … [Read more...] about Exclusive: Why MLB decided to develop R.B.I. Top 20 Best-Selling Games In The US For November 2017
November was a big month for new video game releases, but which sold the best? The NPD Group today released its report covering game sales in the US, revealing that the perennial powerhouse franchise, Call of Duty, was No. 1 again with Call of Duty: WWII. Rounding out the top five were Star Wars: Battlefront II, Assassin's Creed: Origins, NBA 2K18, and Madden NFL 18.After just one month, Call of Duty: WWII is now the best-selling game of 2017 and the top-seller for the rolling 12-month period ended November 2017. The game drove the most revenue for any Call of Duty since the massively successful Call of Duty: Black Ops II in 2012. This kind of success was expected, given that Activision already said Call of Duty: WWII sales doubled that of the underperforming Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare at launch. Also of note is that the controversy surrounding Star Wars: Battlefront II didn't keep people away, or at least not enough to push the game further down the chart. It was never going to … [Read more...] about Top 20 Best-Selling Games In The US For November 2017
