THE MILKY WAY is on a "doomsday" collision course with a nearby galaxy – and the enormous space smash just got a new deadline. Scientists now believe we'll hit Andromeda in 4.5billion years' time, about 600million years later than we thought. But our galaxy is still doomed, as the meeting with cause the pair to merge, changing the form of Milky Way for good. In the solar system, gravity will likely tug the Sun into a new orbit, dragging Earth and the other planets with it. Researchers tracked the positions of stars in nearby galaxies to calculate when Andromeda will hit the Milky Way. They used data from the European Space Agency's Gaia satellite, which is mapping billions of stars to measure their position and speed. Stellar movements in the Milky Way, Andromeda and another nearby galaxy called Triangulum show a collision will happen later than thought. The pair will smash into one another in about 4.5billions years' time – a fair chunk longer than the … [Read more...] about Earth’s ‘doomsday’ collision with Andromeda galaxy will happen LATER than we thought – but Milky Way is still doomed

NASA is locked in a race to Mars with Elon Musk after vowing to put humans on the Red Plant in 25 years. The US space agency is researching how to help mankind survive in a martian mission that will subject space explorers to deadly radiation, vision loss and cause bones to crumble. Former NASA astronaut Tom Jones said: "The cost of solving those means that under current budgets, or slightly expanded budgets, it's going to take about 25 years to solve those." The current date set by governments for man's first steps on Mars is in the late 2030s. Meanwhile, Elon Musk has his eyes on a Mars mission, with supporters - including Brit astronaut Tim Peake - saying he could get us there within 20 years. He also has pledged to send humans to Mars by 2024 in bold plan to make humanity an ‘interplanetary species’. In February, his Space X program launched a demonstration flight to the Mars orbit - and even sent a Tesla car hurtling towards the Red Planet. At an … [Read more...] about NASA in space race with Elon Musk as they vow to put humans on Mars in 25 years
A MYSTERIOUS object shooting through the solar system forced scientists to whip out one of the world's largest telescopes to clarify whether life does exist in our solar system. The space rock was first spotted by astronomers in Hawaii in October 2017 and since then they've been trying to determine whether it's an alien spaceship. Here's what we know about it. What is Oumuamua and where did it come from? Oumuamua, named after the Hawaiian term which means "a messenger from afar arriving first" is the first visitor to our solar system that has come from somewhere else in our galaxy. The cigar-shaped space rock is said to have first soared past Earth in November 2017. The 400m long rock has intrigued scientists because it is only a tenth as wide. Even its needle shape is peculiar. Asteroids which typically soar through our solar system are round. Comets usually follow an ellipse-shaped orbit around the sun. But Oumuamua appears to orbit at an angle. Its path suggests it entered our … [Read more...] about What is Oumuamua, where did it come from, and could the cigar-shaped asteroid be an alien spaceship?
AN ASTEROID bigger than the Great Pyramid of Giza is heading for Earth at 20,000mph this week, Nasa has warned. The space rock, known as 2016 NF23 and measuring 500ft in diameter, is expected to "skim past" our planet on Wednesday. It's travelling close enough for scientists to put it on the US space agency's "potentially hazard asteroid" watch list. Nasa has classified NF23 as an “Atens” body, which means its orbit comes into the vicinity of Earth, and says it will make a "close approach" on August 29. It estimates the asteroid to be between 230ft and 525ft in diameter, which means it could be as big as the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt at 451ft tall. It is expected to pass within 0.03377 astronomical units, or about three million miles, from Earth - for perspective, the sun is 93million miles away. The space agency classifies Near-Earth objects (NEOs) or asteroids as "potentially hazardous" if they come within 4.6 million miles of our planet. It says that space … [Read more...] about Asteroid 2016 NF23 – Nasa warns ‘potentially hazardous’ space rock bigger than the Great Pyramid of Giza heading for Earth at 20,000mph this week
AN enormous asteroid has come so close to Earth that it is visible to the naked eye. The space rock, known as 4 Vesta is four times the size of the UK and so bright that it can be spotted from 106 million miles away. It is visible in both hemispheres, where it can be seen in the night sky near Mars, Saturn and the Sagittarius constellation. The asteroid measures more than 326 miles in diameter, 50 times wider than the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs, will be visible in the night sky until July 16. Vesta was first discovered in 1807 and was named after the Roman goddess of the hearth and home, who is sister to Ceres – the name of the largest asteroid in the belt, which measures 587 miles in diameter. Ceres was recently reclassified as a dwarf planet. The rock resides in the asteroid belt and is one of the largest known to man. From Earth, the immense stone appears as a dim yellow dot. Vesta easy to spot compared to other asteroids in the same belt as its surface is more … [Read more...] about Monster’ Asteroid 4 Vesta that’s FOUR TIMES bigger than the UK is so close to Earth you can see it – and here’s how
