TIGA celebrated last month when tax breaks for video game companies were finally put into effect. But the organization isn't looking to stop there, and wants policy makers to set up a funding model for game devs in the UK.The company suggests that National Lottery money could be used in part to set this new fund up, and that money could be provided to UK developers as either pound-for-pound loans, or in the form of convertible loans on commercial terms. The CCF could then recoup investments from successful game sales once a developer has generated a certain amount of revenue over an agreed time period, suggests TIGA.Such a fund has precedents, notes TIGA -- Finland's Tekes government backed agency, for example, has provided around $70 million in funding for video game companies, including to help studios like Supercell and Rovio grow into high-profile names. And TIGA notes that there's already such funds in place for other creative outlets in the UK. For example, the British Film … [Read more...] about TIGA calls for $5 million game development fund in the UK

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on DS could sell 2 million units in its first year, says Cowen Group analyst Doug Creutz, as he waxes effusive on Take-Two's talent stable.Creutz's estimation is based in part on Chinatown Wars' high Metacritic rating, currently at 95 based on eight reviews. "If the title's subsequent reviews are consistent with the initial critical response, 'Chinatown Wars' would be the highest rated title on the DS to date," he says. The userbase of Nintendo's handheld stands at 27 million in the United States, and while Creutz notes that userbase "skews younger," there's a core following for the handheld as well. "The strong critical rating will likely increase the game's chances of becoming a commercial hit," says Creutz.Although analysts like Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter have expressed skepticism on the year ahead for Take-Two, Creutz believes the publisher's current estimates for its 2009 performance will prove conservative."The highly-rated release supports … [Read more...] about Analyst: High-Rated Could Sell 2 Million
Rearranging Your Opponent’s Face By Kudo Tsunoda Executive Producer, EA Canada Hey! My name is Kudo Tsunoda, and I am the executive producer on EA Sports Fight Night 2004. In our last developer diary, we talked about the genesis of our game's most innovative feature, Total Punch Control. This feature allows you to control your fists with the analog sticks to throw precise punches. Gone from gameplay are the days of complete button mashing. Landing punches is now a skill you have to master. So one thing we are very focused on doing in Fight Night 2004 is giving gamers an immediate graphical reward for landing punches on their opponents. Fortunately, boxing provides this naturally, since boxers' faces are constantly being damaged and deformed by the impact of fists. Punch impacts have never been done justice in other boxing and fighting games. Gathering the reference materials for this part of the game was the most bizarre research task of the project. We put together … [Read more...] about Fight Night 2004 Designer Diary #2
Battalion 1944 developer Bulkhead Interactive has announced some of the stretch goals that they’re adding to the WWII game’s Kickstarter page. The shooter reached it’s funding goal of £100,000 in just three days and is described as a game that “recaptures the core of classic multiplayer shooters and propels WW2 into the next generation.”The game is an infantry based first-person shooter that puts an emphasis on skill, not through “overpowered unlocks & abilities.” The developer also said there won’t be any grinding or “exosuits.”“We’ve been closely listening to all the comments we’ve received from the Battalion community, and we’re responding directly through our stretch goals,” Executive Producer at Bulkhead Interactive Joe Brammer said, “This was the reasoning behind waiting so long for stretch goals, to give us a chance to listen to our community. Learn all about Halo 2's extensive multiplayer features in this exclusive video interview. Click "Stream for Free" for higher resolution. Let's face facts: Halo 2 is going to be the biggest Xbox game this year. Maybe the biggest game, period. The fan base that has emerged around Bungie's original trendsetting Xbox shooter is nothing short of staggering in its size and its fanatical devotion, and now that fan base is beginning to slaver like a hound before the feast of a stack of hams at Halo 2's imminent November release. Anticipation for the game is so strong that even a peripherally related, Web-based marketing campaign recently whipped legions of fans into a frenzy without ever mentioning the game's name. Even now, just two months before Halo 2's release, Microsoft and Bungie have remained viciously protective of the game's vaunted single-player campaign. Not so with the online mode, however. The secretive developer invited us right into its own offices recently for an … [Read more...] about Halo 2 Multiplayer Beta Hands-On
It may not seem like an immediately fascinating news story to say that an MMOs subscriber numbers have stayed the same, as mentioned in Nathan’s post earlier, but I think there’s an interesting point to be made when noting that World Of Warcraft is back over 10m. While the game has previously peaked at over 12m paying subscribers, a lot of fuss and soothsaying took place over the past year, declaring the MMO’s demise as inevitable. Subs numbers dropped to 9.1m, and much of the media declared, or at least speculated, that this was it. Rather than noticing that it was just a long time since there’d been a new expansion, so as you’d expect some players would have felt they’d seen all the current content so looked elsewhere for their gaming crack. In fact, the media has been gleefully predicting the doom of WoW for years. So why isn’t anyone reporting the real story here? Why isn’t anyone spotting that this is a phenomenon?Yes, I’m … [Read more...] about World Of Warcraft STILL Has 10 Million Subscribers!
By: Matthew Rorie Design: Randall Montanari For fans of online role-playing games, the release of Neverwinter Nights in 2002 was a revelation. The game shipped with a robust suite of world-building tools, giving wannabe dungeon masters the ability to create their own scenarios and modules to share online. The game was an immediate hit, and while it was a big departure from the previous Dungeons & Dragons games from BioWare, like the esteemed Baldur’s Gate II, the game and its expansion packs went on to sell over a million copies. Now, over four years later, Obsidian picks up the mantle with Neverwinter Nights 2. The game is superficially the same as Neverwinter Nights, but is improved in almost every way, especially for fans of in-depth single-player role-playing games. While the story of Neverwinter 1 was serviceable, the game was built around the multiplayer arena, and thus, even in the single-player game, you could only control one character, and your party’s … [Read more...] about Neverwinter Nights 2 Walkthrough
