H.Bomberguy, aka Harry Brewis, has been streaming Nintendo 64 game Donkey Kong 64 on and off for the past 50-plus hours. He’s doing so to raise money for U.K.-based charity Mermaids, an organization that offers support for transgender children, teenagers, and their families. What started off as an endeavor to “spite” an Irish comedian who opposes the charity organization has turned into a wild, surprising success; Brewis has raised more than $280,000 so far, and his stream has featured cameo appearances from Doom co-creator John Romero, activist Chelsea Manning, and U.S. congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Brewis started his stream on Twitch on Jan. 18. In a YouTube video announcing the stream, he said he’d never beaten Donkey Kong 64 as a kid. His old save file purportedly shows 59-plus hours of playtime, but just 69 percent completion. Brewis’ goal for the charity stream was to beat the N64 game 100 percent. “I want to destroy Donkey Kong … [Read more...] about How Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wound up on a Donkey Kong 64 Twitch charity stream

Today is officially Black Friday, a day of great deals and savings as far as the eye can see—we've got the best of it rounded up for you here—and indie digital storefront Itch.io is taking part in the festivities by not having a sale. Instead of asking developers to drop their prices, it's giving 100 percent of its cut on sales for the day to The Trevor Project, a charity that provides support for LGBTQ youth in the US, and The Nature Conservancy, which works to combat climate change and encourage sustainable living around the world. That's not to say that there aren't any games on sale—there are—but I think it's more a matter of games that happened to be on sale when Black Friday rolled around, rather than a big bargain blowout targeted for the day. It's possible that some developers intentionally set their sales to run through Black Friday, but that leads down a rabbit hole of speculation that isn't really relevant to the matter at hand anyway. So let's … [Read more...] about Itch.io’s Black Friday ‘Not-a-Sale’ is raising funds for charity
If you’ve been playing Overwatch the past few days, you might have noticed that Mercy has a new Overwatch charity skin, a pink one for the Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation. However, Sony is apparently being accused of taking cuts of the donations from the total, more than what is normal. In the Playstation Store, the skin is priced at 12.99, however only 10.12 of that will be given to Blizzard Entertainment, which has done other charity sales in the past. While that’s likely because Sony always gets a cut of the profits for everything that’s bought on their store, the situation brings back memories of the charity DLC for Middle-earth: Shadow of War. When Michael Forgey, an employee at Monolith Software, died and left a family behind, Warner Bros and Monolith created a DLC pack that would add an orc known as Forthog Orc-Slayer to the game. However, controversy erupted when it was revealed that Monolith and Warner Bros were taking a percentage of the profits while … [Read more...] about Is Sony Taking A Cut Of The Earnings From Mercy’s Overwatch Charity Skin?

Donations are still coming in, but Awesome Games Done Quick 2018 is over and it has again set a record for contributions. This year’s weeklong speedrunning marathon has raised $2,263,508.19, topping last year’s total by about $40,000. The money goes to the Prevent Cancer Foundation. This is the second time Awesome Games Done Quick has raised $2 million. Each year, except for 2016, has raised more money than the preceding one, in a series going back to 2011. In all, more than 32,000 people donated, and more than 130 of them gave more than $1,000. More donation states are at AGDQ’s event tracker page. AGDQ comprised more than 150 runs, wrapping up with a nearly five-hour plunge through The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild (all main quests, no amiibo assists) by atz. Saturday also saw a three-way race through The Legend of Zelda (100 percent completion) by JSR2gamers, BT and RandomEffekt, and a two hour run at Bloodborne beating all bosses.
