Players are just over one month into Elite: Dangerous’ Distant Worlds 2 expedition, an 18-week test of endurance ferrying more than 13,000 players to the far side of the Milky Way Galaxy. So far there have been plenty of close calls and accidents, mostly involving botched landings and player-versus-player combat. But the fleet itself is proving to be incredibly resilient. There’s no better example than the dramatic rescue of Commander Proigr3 that took place over the weekend. While attempting to supercharge their hyperspace drive in the Empyrean Straits region, more than 20,000 light years from Earth, Proigr3 lost control of their ship and suffered serious damage. Things got so bad inside the cockpit of the large, multi-role Asp Explorer that Proigr3’s glass canopy broke away, venting most of their oxygen into space. With their heads-up display badly damaged, Proigr3 was left flying mostly blind while powerful magnetic forces from a neutron star buffeted them around. … [Read more...] about Elite’s Distant Worlds 2 expedition: A dramatic rescue in the Empyrean Straits
In 2016, Ubisoft released cyber sleuthing action-adventure game Watch Dogs 2 on PC and consoles. Although sales of the game appeared to be lower than that of its predecessor (at retail, at least), many fans were eager to play a sequel. After games in Chicago and San Francisco, people wanted to know where the Watch Dog series would go next. According to trademarks, fans of the open-world series may not have long until they get to see Watch Dogs 3 in action. YouTuber SkullziTV regularly looks into Ubisoft’s trademark filings and recently discovered that the company had filed a new Watch Dogs trademark, unrelated to the trademark filings of the previous two games in the franchise. Screenshots of the filing on the United States trademark office website explain that Ubisoft submitted the trademark in November 2018. By popular demand, Battlefield 5’s Squad Conquest multiplayer game type will stick around for another two weeks, running until Wednesday, Feb. 13. The match was introduced on Jan. 17 with Battlefield 5’s second chapter in its Tides of War post-launch schedule, “Lightning Strikes,” but it was originally scheduled to end Jan. 30. Because of the feedback and requests EA DICE got from the community over the past two weeks, the developer is now keeping it around a little longer. Squad Conquest is a smaller version of the 64-player Conquest match, featuring two teams of eight players, and each team broken into two squads of four. The units fight to control three flags on condensed versions of Arras, Rotterdam and Hamada maps. The goal is to control those flags until the opposing team is out of respawns. When it was introduced, Squad Conquest was designed to allow one player to have a greater impact on a match. Vehicle access was much more limited in this mode than it … [Read more...] about Battlefield 5’s Squad Conquest is sticking around another two weeks
EA recently canceled an open-world Star Wars game that was being developed at its Vancouver studio, and commentators are pissed. Rogue One screenwriter Gary Whitta, who has also worked on the creative side of games development, blasted EA on Kinda Funny Games Daily. The game was even an overhauled version of a different in-progress Star Wars title, known as Ragtag, that EA previously canceled in 2017. While EA tends to earn scorn honestly, the publisher is getting a bum rap for failing to produce Star Wars games in this particular situation. The truth is that if a publisher has a talented, promising team of developers, it’s almost always better off creating an original game. Studios that are known and loved don’t make Star Wars game for one simple reason: Doing so doesn’t make any … [Read more...] about Why your favorite devs (probably) don’t want to make a Star Wars game
