Superhero fights are one hell of a spectacle. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe that orchestral music swells, there's some dramatic superhero landings, lightning gets thrown around, and the choreography is simply the best. But how do you translate that action to games? Vince Napoli has the answer. He worked on God of War as the main hero designer and was responsible for the design and implementation of the entire suite of Kratos' attacks for his axe Leviathan, his shield, and bare-knuckled fighting. And now he's lending his expertise to Marvel's Avengers, making Ironman, Black Widow, the Hulk, Thor, and Captain America feel every inch the superhero, no matter which one you play. I got the chance to chat to Napoli about how he's going to make us feel like we're a hero with every punch, kick, and explosion, plus how his time with Kratos has influenced the Avengers' approach to ass-kicking.Like God of War, character comes firstNapoli has a clear set of rules when it comes to envisioning … [Read more...] about God of War’s combat designer is working on Marvel’s Avengers
There's dramatic irony, and then there's the The Outer Worlds and the way it is relentlessly satirising corporatism when its makers have just been acquired by one of the largest corporations in the world. Given their penchant for seeing the funny side of things, though, it wouldn’t be surprising if the developers at Obsidian haven’t already cracked that joke with each other several times since Microsoft picked them up last year, howling at the absurdity of it all. It's no easy feat to make a video game that's both funny and compelling, after all, but The Outer Worlds hands-on preview at E3 2019 suggests that this esteemed studio is still more than capable of repeating the successes of its cult classic Fallout: New Vegas. From seducing robots in binary code to discovering a pen full of "cystypigs" (genetically engineered sow bred to grow bacon flavoured tumors for public consumption, obviously), The Outer Worlds is already tickling rib cages as potentially one of, if not the … [Read more...] about The Outer Worlds hands-on: The best RPG Bethesda never made
Borderlands 3 received yet another trailer at E3 2019, and this one is packed with 100% brand new footage, and you know what that means. Yep, it's time to dissect what information is hidden in that 2-minute trailer! It might have been fast-paced and left you reeling by the time it was over, but slow down the footage and there's plenty of little details hidden in the background. Right at the beginning, Lilith confirmed that she's no longer a Siren (after being seen without her tattoos in the first major trailer), implying that Tyreen – one half of the evil Calypso Twins – might have sapped Lilith's powers away from her, plus there's hints that vehicular combat is about to get way more depth than ever before, and one of the Vault Hunters can turn invisible... honestly, stick with me here because I am just getting started. 1. There's a homage to the first time you met LilithNear the beginning of the trailer Lilith blows a kiss to the camera before flipping us all … [Read more...] about 14 things you missed in the Borderlands 3 E3 2019 trailer
There’s a popular phrase in marketing, dating back to the 19th century American merchant John Wanamaker: “Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted, the problem is I don’t know which half”. In the digital era, it’s lampooned as a relic of a bygone age, with most advertising attached to endless statistics around reach, engagement and return on investment. At E3 2019, Xbox didn’t just waste half its advertising spend, it obliterated it in a display of lasers, fireworks, flames, a life-size Lego supercar and ONLY THE ACTUAL KEANU REEVES. The Xbox E3 conference was a reckless, wasteful ode to times past - and, as such, a complete triumph.Conventional wisdom dictates that the E3 games show is a regal folly and the press conference is its court jester. Pre-recorded gameplay streams, as championed by Nintendo’s slick Nintendo Direct demos - or, more recently, Sony’s State of Play broadcasts - are the best way to show off your game to the … [Read more...] about Lasers, flames and Keanu Reeves
Ah, 4K gaming. That elusive golden goose we all strive to enjoy at least once in our lives. Few things are more illustrious in this transistor-filled world of ours than the pixel-packed profession of 4K gaming, either on one of the best gaming laptops or a full-size desktop rig. When it comes to seeing clarity in those AAA games of ours, having nearly 8.3 million pixels refreshing on your screen 60 times a second is nothing short of awe-inspiring. In short, it looks stunning, and with the advent of powerful new desktop and laptop GPUs from Nvidia and AMD alike, it seems we’re at an inevitable technological impasse. Gradually, we’re all beginning to take that final leap, crossing ourselves into the 4K gaming gold standard. That's fine for the best gaming PC towers, but what of those folks who are always on the move, the “mobile go-getters” hardware makers so confidently crave? Those who don’t have the time or the cash to maintain a full-size gaming rig. Is … [Read more...] about Should you buy a 4K laptop for gaming?
